MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each week throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks. James Allen (Low A: Dayton/Cincinnati): A former reliever who is now a starter, Allen tossed six shutout innings in his only start last week for the Dayton Dragons of the Low A Midwest League… Allen, a seventh-round pick by Cincinnati in 2011, shut down Bowling Green on Thursday, working around four hits and two walks while striking out three batters… Since his first start on July 3, the right-hander has averaged just under five strikeouts per game… Allen holds a 7-4 record and a 3.80 ERA in 32 outings, including 10 starts, allowing 45 earned runs on 95 hits in 106.2 innings to go along with 32 walks and 90 strikeouts… His 90 strikeouts are seventh in the Midwest League among pitchers who have thrown fewer than 110 innings… The Dragons are 27-33 during the second half and 57-73 overall. Kayvon Bahramzadeh (Rookie Arizona League: AZL Athletics/Oakland): Bahramzadeh, a 24th-round selection this year by Oakland, did not pitch last week for the AZL Athletics of the Rookie Arizona League… A product of Tucson, Ariz., Bahramzadeh is 1-1 with a 7.68 ERA in 12 games, including nine starts, while he has issued just six walks and struck out 42 batters in 34 innings… His 42 strikeouts are 12th overall in the AZL and second among pitchers that have thrown fewer than 35 innings… The AZL Athletics, which has clinched a playoff spot, has two more regular season games before the AZL playoffs… The A’s lead the AZL Cubs by one game with a 36-16 record. Justin Bloxom (Double A: Harrisburg/Washington): A 2009 draft pick by Washington, Bloxom recorded hits in all four games he played in last week for the Harrisburg Senators of the Double A Eastern League… The third baseman began his week with a solo homer on Tuesday against Reading before driving in a run and singling on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively… He capped his week with a 3-for-4 effort with a double, a triple and three RBI on Saturday at Bowie… Bloxom is hitting .249 in 59 games at the Double A level with 11 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 20 RBI… He was hitting .259 with 13 doubles, 12 homers and 34 RBI for High A Potomac before being promoted… The Senators are 61-72 this season and have been eliminated from contention for the Eastern League playoffs. Jake Brown (Rookie: Bristol/Chicago AL): Brown, a 30th-round selection in this year’s draft by the Chicago White Sox, tallied three multi-hit games last week for the Bristol White Sox of the Rookie Appalachian League, giving him five in the last two weeks… The shortstop began his week going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles on Monday at Johnson City before another three hits Thursday at Princeton… He also went 2-for-5 with a RBI against the Rays on Saturday… In 48 games this season, Brown is hitting .247 with six doubles, one triple and 11 RBI… The Russell, Kan., product has also drawn 26 walks and scored 19 runs… Bristol is 19-44 this season and has been eliminated from contention for the Appalachian League playoffs. Wade Hinkle (Rookie: Orem/Los Angeles AL): Hinkle, a 27th-round selection by the Los Angeles Angels this year, was named a Pioneer League All-Star this week and proved it with five two-hit games and six extra-base hits – including three home runs – last week for the Orem Owlz… Hinkle, who now has a hit in 31 of his last 36 games, carded a pair of hits on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Great Falls, while he ended his week with two-hit games on Saturday and Sunday at Helena… Included in his two-hit games were a double and a RBI Tuesday, a homer and two RBI Wednesday, a solo homer Thursday, two doubles on Saturday and a homer and two RBI on Sunday… Hinkle is hitting .335 in 62 games this season with 15 doubles, 14 home runs and 50 RBI to go along with 38 walks and 57 runs scored… The first baseman is tied for fifth in the Pioneer League in batting average, while he leads the league in runs scored and OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage; 1.031), ranks second in home runs and total bases (133), third in on-base percentage (.445) and slugging percentage (.586), is tied for fourth in walks, ranks fifth in RBI, is tied for seventh in hits (76) and tied for eighth in doubles… Orem leads the south division during the second half at 16-11, while the Owlz are 33-32 overall. Kyle Hunter (Low A: Clinton/Seattle): Hunter, a 31st-round draft pick of Seattle last season, pitched twice last week for the Clinton LumberKings of the Low A Midwest League… The left-hander tossed 1.2 scoreless innings on Tuesday against Cedar Rapids, working around two hits and a walk with a strikeout… On Friday at Burlington, he surrendered a run over two innings with three hits a walk and three strikeouts… Hunter holds a 3-5 record and a 3.19 ERA in 36 relief outings this year, allowing 28 earned runs in 79.0 innings with only 10 walks and 66 strikeouts… Clinton holds a 5.5-game lead in the western division during the second half with a 39-22 record, while the LumberKings are 62-67 overall. Carter Jurica (High A: San Jose/San Francisco): A third-round pick by San Francisco in 2010, Jurica has continued his current hot streak with hits in five games last week – including three two-hit games – for the San Jose Giants of the High A California League… The shortstop drove in two runs on Monday against Visalia before two-hit games on Tuesday and Thursday against the Rawhide… On Friday at Rancho Cucamonga, Jurica went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and three runs scored… In 101 games this season, Jurica is hitting .297 with 18 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 54 RBI… The Giants are four games back of Modesto for the north division lead at 32-30 during the second half and are tied with the Nuts in the wild-card standings at 70-62 overall. Jason King (Low A: West Michigan/Detroit): A fourth-round pick by Detroit last season, King came away with five hits last week for the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Low A Midwest League… The third baseman doubled on Monday and Tuesday against Great Lakes with two RBI on Monday and another on Tuesday, while King capped his week with a 2-for-5 game with a double, a triple and two RBI Sunday at Dayton… In 82 games this season, King is hitting .245 with 21 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 30 RBI… The Whitecaps are 32-30 during the second half to tie for fourth place in the eastern division and are 68-64 overall. Dan Klein (Class A Short-Season: Vancouver/Toronto): A 28th-round pick by Toronto this year, Klein played in two games last week for the Vancouver Canadians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League… The catcher went 0-for-3 in both games, but Klein did draw a walk Sunday against Boise… Klein is hitting .214 in 36 games this season with five doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI… The Canadians are tied for the west division lead during the second half at 20-14, while they are 42-29 overall. Nick Martini (Low A: Quad Cities/St. Louis): Martini, a seventh-round selection of St. Louis last year, picked up seven hits in five games last week for the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Low A Midwest League… The outfielder tallied three multi-hit games last week, going 2-for-4 on Wednesday against Kane County before a 3-for-4 effort with two triples, three RBI and three runs scored against the Cougars on Friday… He completed his week with a two-hit game with a double on Saturday at Clinton… Martini is hitting .266 in 121 games this season with 21 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 49 RBI… He ranks sixth in the Midwest League in walks (64), while he is eighth in runs scored (78)… Quad Cities is 29-32 during the second half and 64-66 overall. A.J. Morris (High A: Daytona/Chicago NL): A 2009 draft choice by Washington, Morris saw time in two games last week for the Daytona Cubs of the High A Florida State League… The right-hander worked a scoreless inning with two strikeouts on Wednesday at Clearwater before picking up the save Friday at Tampa, allowing a run over two innings with two more fanned batters… In 37 games – all out of the bullpen – Morris is 5-2 with a 2.37 ERA and five saves… He has allowed 13 earned runs on 35 hits in 49.1 innings to go along with 15 walks and 40 strikeouts… The Cubs are 25-34 during the second half and 55-72 overall. Carlos Torres (MLB: Colorado): Torres earned a pair of victories in two relief outings last week for the Colorado Rockies… The right-hander began his week on Wednesday by allowing just one run on one hit with a walk and strikeout to pick up the win at the New York Mets… Then on Saturday at the Chicago Cubs, Torres entered in the fourth inning and went on to toss 2.1 scoreless frames, surrendering a hit with a walk and two more strikeouts… A 15th-round pick of the White Sox in 2004, Torres holds a 3-1 with a 4.00 ERA in 20 outings for the Rockies, allowing 16 earned runs on 27 hits with 18 walks and 25 strikeouts in 36.0 innings… He now has four career Major League victories, the most by a former Wildcat since Andy Replogle had nine during the 1978 season… Colorado went 5-2 last week to push its season record to 51-75… Torres has pitched in 14 games for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Triple A) this season with 13 starts, holding a 5-4 record and a 3.98 ERA. |
