Kansas State Quotes
Head Coach Bruce Weber
Opening statement …
“I thought it was a good win, it was a tough opponent. It is the first game, you have an experienced group. We really knew nothing about them, I think they had one scrimmage against a Division two team and no exhibitions so we did not have a feel. Coach (Chester) Frazier scouted them. We just went off of all of last year’s stuff and they pretty much did what they did last year. Good guard play I thought they were very quick. Their big guys are flying around and slowly but surely we wore them down. With all teams you go as your guards go. Angel (Rodriguez) gets in foul trouble and Martavious (Irving) comes in and does some nice things for us, keeps the lead in the first half along with Will. Angel gets us going in the second half. I think overall we just wore them down, our physicality and our depth, it just kind of took a toll on them. It was a good game for us, it was good experience. Now you keep making progress and come back and we have a big task next week with a couple games here trying to get to New York.”

On being the first official game…
“It is still the real thing. Obviously, exhibitions do not count on your record, so I hope the kids are excited. We talked about energy and enthusiasm, we played at a high level. I think we play hard and that is one thing that their coaches said again. I thought they played hard but I thought we matched it. I thought we were pretty good until the last three or four minutes, we may have lost some of our intensity, but it is about the team. That is all that I am focused on and hopefully we help them get better. We have nice pieces. If we can get everybody to accept what their role is and then we get some consistency, especially from these guys, I think we have a chance to be pretty good because we have some big guys inside that can cause some damage and problems.”

On Angel’s second half scoring run…
“You always talk about the first five minutes, it was pretty even and the first half the last five minutes of the half we had a chance to kind of stretch it out, but we missed some free throws and missed some opportunities. But the start of the second half is when you can break their spirit, which we did. It was partially Angel’s help with making a couple shots and getting us going along with a couple of steals and then just good defense too. They shoot 9-for-33 in the second half. You can just see that we wore them down and did a better job. We adjusted on the ball screens and how we guarded them, but he got us going, with our guard play between Tay, Will (Spradling), and Angel we were pretty solid. Even assist/turnovers, I think we had four turnovers down the stretch. Otherwise we have pretty good numbers and if they take care of the basketball and get it to the right players and the right places and make open shots then it makes it tough to guard us, because our big guys can score. They made a decision to pack it in and make shots. We did not make shots in the first half, the second half we made them. We got them to play more spread out, we played good defense and got out in transition. It just caused them some problems.”

Sophomore Guard Angel Rodriguez
On energy during the second half …
“I barely played the first half so I usually play with a lot of energy. I knew this time I had to come out with the most energy I have ever played with. I was fresh, my legs were fresh. I did have to be careful, which I kind of was not. We made some adjustments in the locker room and we kind of had a feeling of them,. The main point was just playing hard and playing our game. We started playing our game, running transitions, setting ball screens and not playing selfishly and we got a lead.”

Senior Guard Martavious Irving
On playing with Angel…
“We have been playing together for a few years now, so it is easy to read off him and him to read off us. I think they put us in position for us to succeed with a lot of the motion offense that we do. Just reading screens and knowing where each other are going to go.”

On being a leader on the team…
“Most of us have played in tough games here, a lot of the big games in the Big 12, and we know how hard it is going to get as the season progresses. So, we have to be the leaders, along with Jordan, he has been here for a while. But most of us that have been here, we have to just let them know that these games get more tough. We have to play more tough as the season progresses.”

North Dakota Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach Brian Jones
On season opener against Kansas State…
“I think our guys battled the first 20 minutes. They just really wore us out and got us into foul trouble the whole game. I give their defense a lot of credit for their physicality and depth on the inside. That really took a toll on us. A lot of shots were executed but at the end we still have to make the shot. That comes with just having fresh bodies out there with physicality and speed the entire 40 minutes.”

On upcoming home-opener…
“We just have to look at the things we did well. We’ve got a lot of things we could work on, on both sides of the ball. We have to play the whole 40 minutes. The beginning of that second half is where they pulled out on us.”
