MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber announced today that point guard Jevon Thomas has signed with the Wildcat basketball program, joining fellow fall signees Marcus Foster (Wichita Falls, Texas/Hirschi) and Wesley Iwundu (Houston, Texas/Westfield) as members of the 2013 recruiting class.
Thomas, a freshman mid-year enrollee at K-State with four years of eligibility, has been granted an initial eligibility waiver by the NCAA and will be eligible to practice and compete at the conclusion of the 2013 Fall semester.
“We’re excited to welcome Jevon to our program,” said Weber. “He is the type of player with really good quickness and the ability to push the ball and create for others. He also gives us some quality depth at the guard position. We believe he has the ability to become a lockdown defender as he develops as a basketball player.”
A 6-foot, 180-pound point guard from Queens, N.Y., Thomas comes to K-State from St. John’s (Wis.) Northwest Military Academy in Delafield, Wis., where he averaged 15 points and seven assists playing for head coach Brian Richert. He was named the most outstanding player of the 2013 National Prep School Invitational in Providence, R.I., from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3 after averaging 17 points and eight assists per game. Thomas posted 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in a first-round upset of St. Thomas More (Conn.) before adding eight points and eight assists in a win over Notre Dame (Mass.) Prep. He scored a tournament-high 26 points in a loss to Worcester (Mass.) Academy. He also performed well at the Best Western Plus Caisson Shootout in Waynesboro, Va., posting 38 points, 13 rebounds and five assists against power Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy.
Thomas graduated from Quality Education Academy in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he averaged 16 points and 12 assists and led the Fighting Pharoahs to a 23-6 overall record and 10-1 league mark.
With the addition of Thomas to their class, the Wildcats have one scholarship remaining for the 2013-14 season.
No. 13/13 K-State, which remains in a tie with No. 6/5 Kansas for first place in the Big 12, returns to the court on Saturday, as the Wildcats travel to Waco, Texas to face Baylor (16-11, 7-7 Big 12) at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.
