MANHATTAN, Kan. – In what has become a staple of ESPN programming, the Sunflower Showdown between Kansas State and Kansas will once again air on its signature telecast, as the Big 12 Conference and ESPN announced its Big Monday pairings on Monday afternoon.
The long-standing rivalry, which dates back to 1907, will air nationally from Bramlage Coliseum on February 23, 2015 at 8 p.m. CT. 2015 marks the ninth consecutive season that the contest will air to a national audience, including the fifth year in a row on Big Monday.
The 2015 contest will also mark the 11th time that Bramlage Coliseum has played host to a Big Monday telecast, including the seventh time against Kansas. In all, it will mark the 23rd time since 1988 that the rivalry has been broadcast on ABC Sports, ESPN or ESPN2.
In one of the more thrilling games on Big Monday in 2014, K-State knocked No. 7 Kansas, 85-82, in overtime behind 20 points from freshman Marcus Foster. In 2011, the Wildcats defeated the top-ranked Jayhawks, 84-68.
The Sunflower Showdown is one of nine Big 12 games scheduled to air on the league’s signature telecast, which begins Monday, January 5 when Texas hosts Oklahoma at 8 p.m. CT.
The complete Big 12 schedule as well as game times and a full television schedule will be released within the next week to 10 days. As part of the 18-game, round-robin format, K-State will host all nine league members at Bramlage Coliseum.
K-State is set to return nine lettermen, including five players with starting experience, in 2014-15 to go along with Division I transfers Justin Edwards and Brandon Bolden. The squad is coming off its school-record fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013-14, which saw the Wildcats post 20 wins for the eighth year in a row.
The team returns more than 70 percent of its scoring and 65 percent of its rebounding in 2014-15, including its leading scorer Foster (15.5 ppg.) and its leading rebounder Thomas Gipson (6.5 rpg.).
