Oct. 13, 2010
MANHATTAN, Kan. - K-State will officially kick off the start of basketball season on Friday night by hosting "Madness in Manhattan" at Bramlage Coliseum before a national spotlight on ESPNU's Midnight Madness.
The event, which is sponsored by K-State Federal Credit Union, is free to the general public. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the festivities kicking off at 7 p.m. on the Bramlage Coliseum floor.
K-State will be one of seven schools nationally to appear on ESPNU's Midnight Madness from 8 p.m. to midnight CT, joining Connecticut, Duke, Gonzaga, Kentucky, Memphis and St. John's. The network will tape various segments during the event to be re-broadcast during the four-hour time slot with hosts Mitch Holthus and Fran Fraschilla broadcasting from Bramlage Coliseum.
There are a number of activities planned for the event, including scrimmages by both the men's and women's teams and a men's skills competition between the guards and forwards. The event will also feature several special video presentations and performances by the K-State pep band, Willie Wildcat and the Classy Cats. In addition, there will be comments from coaches Frank Martin and Deb Patterson and seniors Jacob Pullen and Shalin Spani.
Students also have the opportunity to win $10,000 and front row seats to men's basketball games this season. Students with the most school spirit will be selected and then voted on by the crowd. The winner receives front row seats to every men's basketball game this season and take a half-court shot to win $10,000. Students will be selected by arriving early, wearing purple, bringing signs and being loud during the event.
The teams kick off their respective seasons with exhibition games the first week of November. The men's squad will host Newman on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., while the women's team will host Fort Hays State two nights later on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
The K-State Athletic Ticket Office will be open throughout the event for fans interested in purchasing women's basketball season tickets, or tickets for the men's basketball game vs. UNLV at the Sprint Center.
