MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State will be participating in an in-season tournament outside of the U.S. for the first time in the program’s history in 2011, as the school was selected to participate in the second annual Cancun Governor’s Cup to be held in late December 2011 at Poliforum Benito Juarez in Cancun, Mexico on Wednesday.
The eight-team field will include K-State, College of Charleston, Massachusetts, Rice, Southern Illinois and Utah, along with two additional teams to be announced at a later date. Four of the six teams won at least 14 games in 2009-10, including 20-game winners K-State and College of Charleston.
The bracket-format tournament will feature 12 games over three days in late December 2011. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracket-tournament format. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game on the final day.
The inaugural event will take place Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 22-24, 2010 at the Poliforum Benito Juarez and will include Appalachian State, Colorado State, East Tennessee State, Ole Miss, Northeastern, Saint Louis, Southern Miss and Texas State. Conference USA will serve as the event’s sponsoring conference.
The tournament offers teams an opportunity to practice, play and be immersed in the Mexican culture and landscape. Additional information, including travel packages, can be found on the Cancun Governor’s Cup website at www.CancunGovernorsCup.com.
K-State has competed outside of the U.S. on various international tours over the years, including trips to Japan (1981), the Netherlands, Sweden and Finland (1993) and most recently, Vancouver, British Columbia (2004). However, this will be the first outside of the U.S. for a tournament during the regular season. In fact, the trip to the O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off in 2009 was the first outside of the continental U.S.
The Cancun Governor’s Cup is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television, Inc., (ERT), a subsidiary of ESPN. ESPN Regional Television markets and/or owns several college basketball events, including the 76 Classic, Charleston Classic, DIRECTV SEC/BIG EAST Invitational, Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, Puerto Rico Tip-Off, Lane Furniture All-College Basketball Classic and BracketBusters.
