GO WILDCATS

Sept. 18, 2010

Head Coach Bill Snyder

Opening Statement...

"You really have to give Iowa State their just due. They play hard; I knew that going into the ballgame. I hope that our players understood that. They are extremely well-coached. I have great admiration for (Austen) Arnaud and the type of young person that he is, as well as the quality of athlete that he is. To come back after that injury and put himself on the field, and to make some plays at the same time, I thought was very admirable. It was just one of those challenging games. Sometimes you stab yourself in the back, and we did that a couple of times. That obviously put us in great jeopardy. The interception return and the penalties in the first half inside the 20-yard line were detrimental to us. We just need to be a lot better when we are trying to put the ball in the end zone."

On the play of Daniel Thomas...

"I thought he was very good. He played well and played hard. He did all the things he always does."

On the ability of Carson Coffman to run the ball...

"We thought we could run it with our quarterback. I do not know how much yardage he got, but he kept the chains moving from time to time. We would not run him if we did not think he could be successful. We do not always guess right but we thought we had a chance to run with him."

On the play of the defense..

"We made some mistakes that could have been critical. I was not pleased about that but we put some pressure on them. For the most part we made some plays on the ball. The good things we did I was pleased with but the bad things we did I am not too happy with."

On the ideal number of carries for Daniel Thomas ...

"I do not have a number. If he does not carry the ball at all but we play well and do the things we are supposed to I would be happy with that. If he carries it 50 times and we do well and gain success from it then I am happy with that too."

On whether Daniel Thomas gets stronger as the game goes on...

"I do not know if that is that case but I do know one thing; he does not get weaker as the game goes on. We rest him from time to time. We are fortunate to have a guy like William (Powell) that can go on the field. He (Daniel Thomas) has been durable."

On Brandon Harold's forced fumble late in the fourth quarter...

"It was a major play in the ball game and for me it kind of reaffirmed his effort at a critical time in the ballgame. That could be challenged at some other times. Brandon perhaps was not as consistent today as he had been on the first two ballgames. He has played well and has not weakened our defense by any stretch of the imagination. He gives us some range and someone who has the opportunity to get his hands up and challenge the pass sometimes. I am happy with him."

On the play of William Powell...

"You look at the kickoff returns, he did a nice job with that. William is just a very fine player and I cannot say that without saying the exact same thing I would say about Daniel (Thomas). He is just a special young person as well. He is a nice man, I appreciate that about him. He has got some talent."

Wide Receiver Broderick Smith

On today's win...

"It was a good win. You know we will have to come out next week just as strong. We are 1-0 in the Big 12.. "

On taking a step forward as a team...

"I think we went out there and executed a lot better on offense. I think we became a lot better offensively, defensively and on special teams. I think we will go out there next week and know that we have to get better and execute again."

Wide Receiver Aubrey Quarles

On todays win...

"It was a great game, it was a nail biter. Defense, offense and special teams all did a pretty good job and were lucky enough to come out with a win and I feel really good about it."

On the impact of running back Daniel Thomas...

"We have got a lot of faith in Daniel because you know he has the capability to make those big plays every time. We really have the trust in the offensive line, too because they are making big holes for Daniel to bust open on these big plays."

On the taking a step forward...

"I feel as if we did take a step forward today because we played well against a Big 12 opponent. Our hats are off to them. They played a pretty good game but we were able to come out with a win, so I feel confident in our team."

Defensive Back Tysyn Hartman

On getting the win...

"It feels great. We knew it would be a close battle, just like it was last year. We were fortunate to come out on top, and Iowa State is a great team."

On the inability to pull away...

"I feel like we would do a great job, but they would respond on the next drive. I thought we played a good game overall, but they always seemed to get some sort of points."

On where the secondary is as a unit...

"I think in the secondary we made some strides. We did not allow the deep-ball to be caught like we had in previous games. We need to tackle better in the future. (Austen) Arnaud was able to break out of a lot of tackles today.

Linebacker Blake Slaughter

On winning in Arrowhead Stadium..

"It was pretty awesome, but I played here last year so it was nothing new to me. Coming into the game I knew what to expect, so you just have to go out there and make plays. If you truly sit back and think about it, it is pretty cool to play in an NFL stadium."

On what the defense needs to improve on ...

"I think we have to become more physical upfront. We have to be able to tackle better, wrapping them up around the feet."

On Iowa State's physicality...

"I would not say they were more physical than I expected, but I did know they were going to be a tough team. Their linemen get off of the ball and get their hands inside and are able to get a lot of movement. They were definitely the most physical team we have seen so far."
