Rooks Drafted by Saints; Cats Hold Big 12-Best Draft Streak

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State offensive tackle Tavon Rooks was selected with the 26th pick of the sixth round (No. 202 overall) in the 2014 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints on Saturday, extending the Wildcats' consecutive draft streak to a Big 12-best 21 years.

Kansas State had the second-longest streak in the conference entering this year's draft as Texas did not have a player drafted for the first time since 1937. K-State's streak began in 1994 when Thomas Randolph and current Wildcat wide receivers coach Andre Coleman were selected in the second and third rounds, respectively.

A two-year All-Big 12 performer, Rooks was a 23-game starter at right tackle during his two year career. He played in all 13 games with 10 starts during K-State's Big 12 Championship season of 2012 before starting all 13 games as a senior in 2013. Rooks came to K-State from Navarro Junior College where he helped lead the Bulldogs to a combined 21-3 record during his two seasons, including a National Championship in 2010 and a No. 5 ranking in 2011.

Rooks, a product of Randallstown, Md., was the first Wildcat drafted by the Saints since Melvin Williams in 2003, while it was the fifth time New Orleans drafted a K-State player.

Kansas State opens the 2014 season on Saturday, August 30, when the Wildcats host Stephen F. Austin at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, a game that serves as the sixth annual K-State Family Reunion. Following a trip to Iowa State on September 6, the Wildcats return home for a nationally-televised primetime matchup against BCS National Championship Runner-Up Auburn on Thursday, September 18.
