MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State running back Daniel Thomas picked up his sixth preseason honor Wednesday as he was named a candidate for the 2010 Doak Walker Award, the PricewaterhouseCoopers SMU Athletic Forum announced.
The award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back, is in its 21st year and is named after SMU’s three-time All-American running back Doak Walker.
Thomas, who was also a candidate in 2009 when he was added to the list midseason, led the Big 12 Conference in rushing and finished fourth in school history for a single season with 1,265 yards. The Hilliard, Fla., product also rushed for a league-high 11 rushing touchdowns en route to 2009 Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year honors.
Thomas was one of 49 running backs nationally to be named a preseason candidate for the 2010 edition of the award. The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select the 10 semifinalists on November 10, while the three finalists will be announced on November 22. The 2010 Doak Walker Award winner will be announced live on ESPN during the ESPNU College Football Awards show on Thursday, December 9.
The Wildcats open the 2010 season on Saturday, September 4, with a nationally-televised matchup against UCLA on ABC. Fewer than 1,500 seats remain available for the contest as Kansas State looks to sell out the Second Annual K-State Family Reunion, which will also serve as Harley Day at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
