MANHATTAN, Kan. - Two Kansas State seniors have earned the highest honor one can achieve on the football field as running back Daniel Thomas and kick returner William Powell have been named 2010 All-Americans by Rivals.com.
Thomas, a Doak Walker Award semifinalist and First Team All-Big 12 pick by the Associated Press, was named a second team All-American, while Powell, a former walk-on and First Team All-Big 12 pick by the coaches, was named to the All-America third team.
Last season's Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year, Thomas is ranked among the top running backs in the nation and was a big component in K-State's run to a bowl game in 2010.
He has already recorded the second-most rushing yards in a season at K-State with 1,495 this season, which is also a new record for a senior back, and heads into the bowl season ranked ninth nationally. His 2,760 career rushing yards rank third all-time at K-State, while his 12 career 100-yard performances rank second and his 269-yard outing at North Texas in the regular season finale was the third-most ever by a Wildcat running back.
Powell currently leads the league and nation in kickoff returns with a 34.6-yard average. One of the best stories in the nation this season, the former walk-on earned a scholarship just days before the Iowa State game on September 18 and then went on to earn Big 12 Player of the Week honors following two big kick returns that led to Wildcat scores. Powell, a candidate for both the Rudy Award and Burlsworth Trophy, also recorded a school-record 100-yard return for a score at Baylor.
Additionally, Powell was one of 15 Wildcats to earn Academic All-Big 12 honors this season and is a key contributor to the program's success in the classroom as K-State has led the Big 12 in football graduation rate in each of the last four seasons.
The Wildcats (7-5) will face Syracuse (7-5) on December 30 in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. The game, which kicks at 2:30 p.m. CT, will be televised nationally on ESPN.
