SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Kansas State men’s golf team opened up the 2013 spring season by tying for eighth place in the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational at the par-71, 6,765-yard Oak Hills Country Club on Tuesday. The Wildcats carded a 34-over 886 to tie with UT Arlington.
“It was not a great round today by any means,” said head coach Tim Norris. “We dropped a couple of places in the team standings and that is never what you want to do in the last round, but I did see some good things over the last two days. We are going to address those before we get ready to go to Arizona in a couple weeks.”
Senior co-captain Ben Juffer led K-State as he carded a 6-over 219 to finish in a tie for 16th place. Juffer recorded a final-round even-par 71 to register his fourth top-20 finish in seven tries this season.
Fellow senior and co-captain Curtis Yonke finished in a five-way tie for 25th place as he notched an 8-over 221 over the course of the event.
Junior Daniel Wood moved up the leaderboard four spots after tallying a final round 3-over 74. Wood entered the final day of play in a tie for 34th before ending the event with in a tie for 30th at 9-over 222.
Rounding out the scoring lineup for the Wildcats was freshman Matt Green and sophomore Kyle Weldon. Green recorded a 15-over 228 to finish in a tie for 49th, while Weldon tallied a 17-over 230 to finish in a tie for 58th.
Oklahoma took home the team title as the Sooners fired a 10-over 862, while Kyle Jones of Baylor earned the individual crown by carding a 7-under 206.
K-State will be back in action in two weeks as the Wildcats will travel to Goodyear, Ariz, to compete in the 2013 WSU Snowman Getaway, Feb. 25-26, at the par-72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Club in suburban Phoenix.
