SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Led by a school-record performance by junior Ben Juffer, the Kansas State men's golf team secured the Wyoming Cowboy Classic title after shooting a 1-over par 281 on Tuesday at the par 70, 7,133-yard north course of the Talking Stick Golf Club. The tournament title was the 30th in program history and the first since winning the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate in the fall of 2009.

The Wildcats finished the three-round event at 14-under par 826, two strokes ahead of second-place Colorado and three shots ahead of San Diego, which finished third. The Wildcats tied the school record for lowest 54-hole score, matching their 826 score at the 2007 Pacific Invitational.

Juffer won the event in a playoff over Colorado State’s Mike Wuertz, notching the classic's individual title. A product of West Des Moines, Iowa, Juffer carded a 3-under par 67 on Tuesday to bring his two-day total to a Kansas State 54-hole score record of 12-under par 198 (65-66-67). The junior, who captured the 29th individual championship in school history, eclipsed Ben Kern’s three-round record of 199 at the 2006 ASU Thunderbird Invitational as he became just the second player in school history to shoot under 200 over three rounds. With the individual title, he surpassed his previous career-best finish set at the 2011 Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic where he placed 10th.

"I am really excited for our guys," head coach Tim Norris said. "It was nice to see them put in the work and to see the results. Today was the same as the first two rounds. The guys played pretty solid with no big mistakes. It was obviously fun to watch. Ben birdied his last hole from four feet where he was head to head with another golfer. You do not get a chance to win a lot in golf – there is a lot of losing in this sport. Savor it while you can."

K-State’s Curtis Yonke completed Tuesday’s round at 2-under par 68 to finish in a tie for ninth. His two-day total of 5-under par 205 marked a new a career-low 54-hole score, and he secured his second top-10 finish of the season.

Kyle Weldon shot a 4-over par 74 during the final round, bringing his three-round total to 2-over par 212 to end in a tie for 43rd place. Kyle Smell carded a third-round score of 2-over par 72, shooting a 5-over par 215 over two days. The Wildcats' David Klaudt finished the day shooting a 5-over par 75, for a 9-over par 219 performance to tie for 83rd.

"We obviously have a big task in front of us in a very competitive conference championship," Norris said. "But a little confidence will go a long way in this game. We will come down off the clouds, get to work next week and see what we can do down in Texas."

The Wildcats will try to use the tournament title as momentum heading into the 2012 Big 12 Championship, which is slated for April 27-29, at the Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
