HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Despite a weather-shortened day, Kansas State senior Curtis Yonke turned in two solid rounds of play on the first day of the 2013 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship at the par-70, 6,593-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club on Monday. Yonke finished in a three-way tie for seventh place, while the Wildcats will head into Tuesday’s play in fifth place in the team standings.
“Curtis has been playing like this all spring, so I knew he had a good chance coming into this tournament,” said head coach Tim Norris. “He has been playing with confidence, and he has been practicing very well lately. He has really done a great job of improving the facets of his game that need improving.”
Following an hour-long delay in the first round due to inclement weather, Kansas State charged to the top of the leaderboard over the end of the first and start of the second round but were unable to maintain their lead, falling four spots over the final nine holes of Monday’s play.
“There are no timeouts in golf, but the weather delay came at a good time,” said Norris. “We were not playing very well at the time and the guys came in and saw their scores and went back out and got after it.”
Despite playing in trying conditions for most of the day, sophomore Kyle Weldon recorded a first-round 2-over 72 to go along with a weather-shortened second-round score of 3-over 73, to end Monday’s action in a tie for 10th place. Junior Daniel Wood and senior Ben Juffer are currently tied for 26th and 35th place, respectively.
Rounding out the scoring lineup for the Wildcats was freshman Matt Green, who turned in an opening-day 15-over 155 and is currently tied for 41st place.
The remainder of the second round will get underway at 11 a.m., on Tuesday morning with six of the nine teams needing to complete play, with third-round action scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., Tuesday afternoon. Live stats will be available at golfstat.com through the duration of the tournament with final results and recaps available at kstatesports.com at the conclusion of each day’s play.
