MANHATTAN, Kan. – Five members of the Kansas State men’s golf team found success in the stroke play qualifying rounds of the 2013 Kansas Amateur Championship at the par-70, 6,501-yard Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kan., on Tuesday and Wednesday. Junior Kyle Weldon, freshman Connor Knabe and senior Alex Carney finished in the top 10 of the stroke play qualifier, while senior David Klaudt and sophomore Hank Simpson also advanced to match play portion of the event.
Weldon came into Wednesday’s action in a tie for fourth place after firing a first-round 1-under 69, but was able to move up the leaderboard two spots by shooting a 2-under 68 in Wednesday’s second round.
An incoming freshman from Leawood, Kan., Knabe was solid through both rounds of stroke play as he recorded a 2-under 68 in the first round and a 1-over 71 in the second round to finish in a three-way tie for fifth place heading into match play.
Carney turned in a 3-under 67 to finish the first 18 holes of stroke play qualifying in second place and followed that effort up with a second-round 4-over 74 to tie for ninth place. Klaudt and Simpson tied for 46th place after each golfer shot a 7-over 147 to make the cut into match play by two strokes.
Match play from the 2013 Kansas Amateur Champion will begin Thursday morning at 8 a.m., and will run the entirety of the weekend with the finals scheduled for Sunday morning. Match-play pairings and results will be available at kansasgolf.org, while recaps and results will be available at kstatesports.com at the conclusion of each day’s action.
