WICHITA, Kan. - Playing in his first collegiate event, Kansas State freshman golfer Matt Green sits atop the leaderboard after turning in a stellar opening-day performance Monday during the 2012 Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic at the par-71 Wichita Country Club.

Competing as an individual, Green posted a 9-under 133 (68-65) to tie with Indian Hills golfer William White for the top spot after the first 36 holes of the tournament.

"Matt is playing as an individual, but he is playing as a Wildcat," said head coach Tim Norris. "I don't think I have ever had a freshman in his first college event shoot scores like that. For him to step right out here in his first tournament was a pretty special performance, and hopefully we can get all 10 of the guys going tomorrow."

As a team, the Wildcats recorded an 11-under 557 and head into Tuesday's final round in third place, trailing host Wichita State by seven strokes and second-place Indian Hills by two shots.

Sophomore Kyle Weldon led the charge for the K-State scoring lineup, carding an 8-under 134 good for third. The Des Peres, Mo., native shot similar scores to Green, opening the event with a 3-under 68 and following that with a 5-under 66.

Junior Daniel Wood tallied a 2-under 140 to finish the first 36 holes in a four-way tie for ninth place. This is Wood's first collegiate action since the spring of 2009. He redshirted last season after spending the previous two years on a church mission in the Dominican Republic.

Curtis Yonke and Alex Carney are tied for 22nd after shooting even-par scores of 142, while Ben Juffer rounded out the Wildcat scoring lineup with 1-over par 143 to tie for 25th.

Also competing as an individual, freshman Hank Simpson opened his Wildcat career with a good showing, recording a 4-under 138 (68-70) on his way to tie for ninth place.

Final-round action from the 2012 Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic will begin tomorrow morning with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. Final results will be available at kstatesports.com as soon as they are made available.
