WICHITA, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s golf team recorded a second-place finish at the 2012 Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic at the par-71 Wichita Country Club on Tuesday. The Wildcats scoring lineup carded a 2-under 850, jumping one spot on the leaderboard from Monday.
Despite windy conditions in south-central Kansas, K-State head coach Tim Norris was pleased with his team’s effort during the final day of competition and is looking forward to tracking his squad’s progression throughout the season.
“It was much windier today, so the greens got smaller and the fairways got a little tighter,” said Norris. “I saw a lot of good things today, but we still have some things that we need to iron out. It was good to see the depth that we have this year. These freshmen are just going to keep going, and I know when we get all of our guys playing well at the same time, we are going to have a really good season.”
The Wildcats were topped by host school Wichita State, which won the event with a 54-hole score of 18-under par 834. The Shockers’ Julian Taylor and William Woods’ Rafael Becker tied for the top individual spot at 8-under par 205.
Competing as an individual, freshman Matt Green capped his Wildcat debut with a 7-under 206 (68-67-70) to finish the event in third place, missing the top spot by just one stroke.
K-State’s scoring lineup was paced by sophomore Kyle Weldon, who notched a 2-under 211, to tie with Wildcat freshman Hank Simpson for seventh place. Like Green, Simpson also competed as an individual, carding a final-round score of 73, finishing his first event six strokes off the lead.
Junior Alex Carney finished in a tie for 18th, moving up four spots from Monday’s action, as he shot a 1-over 72 in the final round. Carney ended the event with a total score of 1-over 214.
Junior Daniel Wood and senior Ben Juffer finished in a tie for 20th place after firing a 2-over 215. Juffer has now earned seven top-20 finishes in his K-State career. Rounding out the scoring lineup for the Wildcats was senior Curtis Yonke, who recorded a 3-over 216 to finish in a tie for 25th place.
K-State will have the next two weeks off as they prepare for the 2012 St. Mary’s Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, September 24 and 25, at the Bayonet and Black Horse Country Club in Monterey, Calif.
