MONTEREY, Calif. – After sitting in 11th place following 36 holes of play on Monday, the Kansas State men’s golf team moved up two spots on the leaderboard Tuesday to finish in tie for ninth at the St. Mary’s Invitational at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course. The Wildcats carded a 54-hole score of 39-over par 903 to finish the event even with UC Irvine.
K-State battled back from a tough opening round in which it shot a 25-over par 313, but the Wildcats moved up the standings thanks to a pair of sub-300 scores in the second and final rounds of competition. Kansas State bettered its first-round score by 19 strokes to card a 6-over par 294, while it finished out the competition with a third-round total of 8-over par 296.
“It was not our best round of golf, but our guys did a decent job,” head coach Tim Norris said about the final round. “Daniel (Wood) had a nice round with three birdies and just one bogey, and he seemed to figure it out a little better than the others. I think everyone came away with a better understanding of their game and how it is going to shape up. We will need to get everyone ready for the home tournament next week.”
The Wildcats were led by redshirt junior Daniel Wood, who finished in a tie for 22nd after recording a 2-under par 70 in the final round of play on Tuesday. Playing in just his second collegiate event since 2009, Wood saw consistent improvement throughout the tournament, recording scores of 77, 74 and 70 to finish play at 5-over 221.
Senior Ben Juffer and junior Alex Carney, who were tied entering Tuesday’s final round, each tallied a 3-over 75 to tie for 42nd at 12-over par 228.
Competing in their second collegiate event, freshmen Matt Green and Hank Simpson rebounded from slow starts with solid second-round scores of 73 and 74, respectively. Overall, Green finished the event at 14-over par 230, while Simpson notched a 54-hole total of 19-over par 235.
Host school St. Mary’s shot a 4-under par 864 to win the event and was able to hold off a charge by Kentucky. The Wildcats combined for a final-round score of 8-under par 280, the best team round of the event. Gael golfer Ben Geyer recorded a 4-under par 212 to take home the tournament’s top individual spot, finishing just one stroke ahead of a two-way tie for second.
The K-State men’s golf team will host the annual Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, Monday-Tuesday, October 1-2, at Colbert Hills. It is the only event at Colbert Hills this season for the Wildcats, and admission is free to the public.
