LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Kansas State men’s golf team finished in 11th place in the 2012 Herb Wimberly Invitational as the Wildcats carded a 25-over 877, including a final-round 5-over 288, at the par-71, 7,074-yard New Mexico State Golf Course on Tuesday.
“We finished up today maybe marginally better (than yesterday),” said head coach Tim Norris. “We definitely underperformed at this tournament and that is never a good thing. I guess the only positive that we can take out of it is that this was not the end of the fall season – we have one more tournament – so I think if we can get back on track in a short period of time. We can have a very successful conclusion out in California on a course that we have had some success on.”
Senior Ben Juffer led K-State as he carded a 3-over 216 to finish in a tie for 22nd place. Juffer’s first-round 69 was a personal-best for the season, while his 36-hole score of 143 tied his best mark to this point in the year.
Freshman Matt Green, sophomore Kyle Weldon and junior Daniel Wood all recorded a 9-over 222 to finish in a tie for 44th place. Senior Curtis Yonke rounded out the scoring lineup for the Wildcats as he carded a 15-over 228 to end the event tied for 66th place.
Playing as an individual, junior Alex Carney tied for 53rd place as he fired a final-round 71 to finish the tournament with an 11-over 224.
Wichita State cruised to victory as the Shockers placed three golfers in the top 20 on their way to an 11-under 841, besting second-place finisher UNLV by nine strokes. Rebel golfer Blake Biddle and Kansas’ Chris Gilbert took home top individual honors as both competitors tallied an 8-under 205 to win the event by two strokes.
The Wildcats will be back in action next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, October 29-31, as they will finish out the fall season in the Pacific Invitational at the par-72, 6,720-yard Brookside Country Club in Stockton, Calif.
