STOCKTON, Calif. - The Kansas State men's golf team sits in a tie for first place after the first round of play in the SCVB Pacific Invitational at the par-72, 6,720-yard Brookside Country Club on Monday. The Wildcats fired a 14-under par 274 to tie with host school Pacific after one day of competition.
"We had a good day today," said head coach Tim Norris. "It was a little bit more representative of how these guys can play and how good they are. I am happy with them for posting a good team score and getting off to such a good start. There is still a long ways to go, but I am confident that our guys are going to put their best foot forward in the next couple of days."
After recording a 7-under 65, junior Daniel Wood sits in a three-way tie for first place. Wood's first-round 65 is the lowest 18-hole score of his collegiate career and is tied for the lowest one-round mark on the team this season.
Sophomore Kyle Weldon is currently is sole possession of fourth place after carding a 5-under 67 on Monday. Weldon trails event leaders Wood, Joe Toland of Charlotte and Pacific's Alex Edfort by two strokes heading into Tuesday's second round.
Senior Curtis Yonke recorded a 2-under 70, tying his best 18-hole score of the season, to finish the first round in a tie for 18th place.
Freshman Matt Green and senior Ben Juffer rounded out the Wildcat scoring lineup as Green notched an even-par 72 and Juffer carded a 2-over 74. The duo finished Monday's opening-round action tied for 32nd and tied for 46th, respectively.
Second round action will get underway from the Brookside Country Club on Tuesday morning, beginning at 8 a.m. (PT). Live results will be available at golfstat.com. Recaps will be available at kstatesports.com at the conclusion of play on each day.
