STOCKTON, Calif. – The Kansas State men’s golf team carded a second-round 18-under 270 to gain sole possession of the lead at the 2012 Pacific Invitational at the par-72, 6,720-yard Brookside Country Club on Tuesday. Despite having to wait out an hour-and-a-half-long fog delay, the Wildcats, who are currently at 32-under 544 after 36 holes of play, hold a five-shot lead over BYU heading into Wednesday’s final round.
“It was another good day for the Cats today,” said head coach Tim Norris. “With the fog delay, there were a couple starts and stops, but once the guys got going, they focused for the get-go and I was really proud of that. Tomorrow, our lead cannot be big enough, so we have to come out fast from the beginning. Hopefully we can get the job done tomorrow and get it finished off.”
Sophomore Kyle Weldon is currently tied for eighth place after he recorded a second-round 2-under 70 on Tuesday, including an eagle on the par-5, 587-yard seventh hole.
Senior Curtis Yonke fired a 4-under 68 to move into a eight-way tie for 13th place. Yonke will enter Wednesday’s final round of play one stroke behind a group of players, including K-State’s Weldon, who are tied for 8th place.
A trio of Wildcats who are a part of a five-way tie for 21st place round out the scoring lineup for K-State. Freshman Matt Green, junior Daniel Wood and senior Ben Juffer finished the second day of play at 5-under 139. Juffer was able to move up the leaderboard 27 spots thanks to a second-round 7-under 65, his lowest 18-hole score of the year. All three Wildcats recorded their lowest 36-hole scores of the season over the first two rounds of action.
Third round action will get underway from the Brookside Country Club on Wednesday morning, beginning at 8 a.m. (PT). Live results will be available at golfstat.com. Recaps will be available at kstatesports.com at the conclusion of play on each day.
