STOCKTON, Calif. - The Kansas State men's golf team currently sits in seventh place after the first round of the 2013 Pacific Invitational at the par-71, 6,511-yard Stockton Golf and Country Club. The Wildcats carded a 4-over 288 in the opening day of the event and sit just four strokes back of second place.
"We were in really good shape to start the back nine today and I think the leaderboard kind of got the best of us," said head coach Tim Norris. "Our guys have pointed towards this tournament over the last couple of weeks because we are the defending champions, so I know they are still excited to finish these last 36 holes, but today I think they got a little overanxious and a little bit ahead of themselves."
K-State was paced by senior Daniel Wood who fired a 2-under 69 to finish Thursday's action in a tie for fifth place. Fellow senior Alex Carney carded a 1-over 72 to enter the second round of play tied for 18th place.
Kyle Weldon currently sits in a tie for 30th place after he recorded a 2-over 73, while David Klaudt and Connor Knabe will head into Friday tied for 37th and 59th places, respectively.
"Hopefully, we can go out and play a good, solid round and get back into contention because we are only four shots out of second place," Norris said. "We did not come here to be in second place but we stayed fairly close today. We are going to have to close the gap a little bit tomorrow and play a really good round. I am confident that we are capable of doing that, we just have to manage our emotions in terms of the leaderboard tomorrow."
BYU turned in a 7-under 284 and ended Thursday's first round with a seven-stroke lead over the 12-team field. The Cougars were led by individual leader Joe Parkinson who fired a 6-under 65.
Second-round action from the Stockton Golf and Country will begin on Friday morning with an 8 a.m. (PST) shotgun start.
