MANHATTAN, Kan. – After closing out the 2012 fall season in spectacular fashion with a one-stroke victory in the Pacific Invitational, the Kansas State men’s golf team will compete in the 2013 UTSA Oak Hills Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, February 10 and 11, at the Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
The event will consist of 36 holes on Monday, with an 8:00 a.m., shotgun start and 18 holes on Tuesday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CT).
“Oak Hills is an ‘old style’ course with small, well-trapped greens,” said head coach Tim Norris. “We have had some great days to get out and prepare. I feel the team is playing as well heading to the first spring tournament as any I have coached here at K-State. It still gets down to execution and trusting your game. Coming off a win in our final fall event, I think the confidence factor is as high as it can be leading into the event.”
The K-State scoring lineup will consist of senior co-captains Ben Juffer and Curtis Yonke, junior Daniel Wood, sophomore Kyle Weldon and freshman Matt Green.
Juffer is coming off a fall season where he carded a team-high-tying three top-20 finishes in six tries, including a 17th-place finish at the Herb Wimberley Intercollegiate and the Pacific Invitational. In both events, Juffer led the Wildcats with team-best low scores of two-over 215 and 11-under 205.
Yonke’s fall season was highlighted by a third-place finish in the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, where he shot a six-over 222 to place third. Playing in five events, Yonke was able to record a stroke average of 73.00, which ranks fourth on the Wildcat roster.
Along with Juffer, Wood was the only other Wildcat to compete in all six team events in the fall, ending the season with two top-20 finishes. Wood led the team to a win in the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate with a second-place finish at four-over 220.
Despite playing in only four events in the fall, Weldon was arguably the most successful Wildcat over the course of season, leading the team in stroke average at 71.63. Weldon’s top two performances came in the first and last events of the fall as he finished in a tie for seventh in the Shocker Invitational and tied for 17th at the Pacific Invitational.
Green opened up his collegiate campaign in grand fashion as fired a team-low 206 to finish in a tie for third at the season-opening Shocker Invitational. Green was a part of five of six K-State scoring lineups, finishing the top 20 three times. The Lenexa, Kan., native set team-lows in 18-, 36-, 54-hole scores during the fall.
In addition to K-State, the field for the Oak Hills Invitational will consist of Baylor, Houston Baptist, Iowa State, Louisiana-Lafayette, McNeese State, North Texas, Oklahoma, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas State, Tulsa, UT-Arlington, UTSA and Wichita State.
