MANHATTAN, Kan. - After a three-month break, the Kansas State men's golf team will open up the spring season with the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, at the Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.

"Oak Hills is a traditional tree-lined course with smallish greens," said head coach Tim Norris. "Daniel (Wood) and Kyle (Weldon) have played there before and their advance scouting report will be crucial for the others. I have instructed the team with the thought that `separation starts with preparation.'

"We must do a great job preparing mentally for this first event. We did have a few days of qualifying last month and I was impressed with the composure the guys displayed during the competition. The goal is to play with that same mindset when we tee it up down in San Antonio."

The K-State scoring lineup will consist of Wood, Alex Carney, Weldon, David Klaudt and Seth Smith, marking the second time this year that the Wildcats have used this scoring lineup.

Wood played in all five events during the fall season, carding a 73.46 stroke average while earning three top-20 finishes. Wood's best result of the fall came in the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate where he finished in fifth place at 9-over 225.

Carney finished the fall by tying for 25th place in the Pacific Invitational following a pair of top-five finishes in the Colbert Intercollegiate and Firestone Invitational. Competing in the Wildcat scoring lineup four times in the fall, Carney turned in a stroke average of 72.60.

Weldon tallied two top-20 finishes in the fall during his five events, all as part of the K-State scoring lineup. His best finish came in the Colbert Intercollegiate as he recorded a 12-over 228 to finish in eighth place.

Klaudt was a member of his team's lineup four times during the fall with his best finish also coming in the Colbert Intercollegiate. In the event, Klaudt fired an 18-over 234 to tie for 17th place. Smith, a true freshman, competed in two events during the fall season and carded a 78.00 stroke average and one top-20 finish.

In addition to Kansas State, the event field will also include Baylor, East Carolina, Houston Baptist, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Oklahoma, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, UTEP, Texas State, Tulsa, UTSA and Wichita State.
