MANHATTAN, Kan. – Four members of the Kansas State men’s golf team were named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, the conference office announced. Senior Curtis Yonke, junior Daniel Wood and sophomore Kyle Weldon were named to the first team, while senior Ben Juffer was named to the second team.
“With the amount of travel and the number of tournaments that these four have participated in this season, their ability to keep up with their academics is a real source of pride – not just for them – but also for myself,” said head coach Tim Norris. “It has always been part of the culture of our team to put academics first and have golf a close second. For those guys to prioritize their days and put in as much time as they do on the golf course and then in the classroom is special.
“I would also like to recognize (academic counselor) Jaime Hamor – who I call our MVP – as a really a special part of our program.”
With this year’s honor, Yonke becomes a three-time Academic All-Big 12 first team selection. An entrepreneurship major, Yonke is coming off a top-10 finish in the 2013 Wyoming Cowboy Classic, where he carded a 2-over 142 to finish in sixth place.
Out of 20 first-team honorees, Wood is the only golfer with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Majoring in social sciences, Wood has played in every tournament for the Wildcats this season.
Weldon, a civil engineering major, is currently in the top five of several statistical categories on the K-State roster, including stroke average, lowest 18-hole score and rounds played.
Juffer has been a one of the team’s most consistent golfers all season as he has competed in every event on the year and has notched four top-10 finishes in 11 tries. A finance major, Juffer currently leads in the team in lowest 18-, 36- and 54-hole scores.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
K-State will have next week off as the Wildcats will prepare to host the 2013 Big 12 Championship, April 22-24, at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
