MANHATTAN, Kan. – Two Kansas State men’s golfers fought off high winds and a competitive field to earn a pair of spots in the 2013 Watson Challenge earlier this week at the Sycamore Ridge Golf Course in Spring Hill, Kan. Sophomore Conner Schrock and incoming freshman JP Derksen finished in first place and third place, respectively, out of the 78-man field to capture two spots in the Kansas City area’s most prestigious golf tournament.

Schrock finished atop the leaderboard after firing a 4-under 68, which included an eagle, two birdies and zero bogies. The Mission Hills, Kan., native played in just two events last season for K-State but looks to move into the Wildcat scoring lineup during his second season in Manhattan.

Derksen recorded a 1-under 71 to finish three strokes behind his future Wildcat teammate in third place. Derksen was even through the front nine then off-set a bogey on the 10th hole with back-to-back birdies on the following two holes.

The Watson Challenge is a 54-hole stroke play championship that combines the Kansas City area’s best amateur and professional golfers, along with the event’s namesake, PGA Tour Legend, Tom Watson. Schrock and Derksen will be joined in the field by former K-State golfers Joe Ida, the event’s defending champion, and recent graduate Curtis Yonke, who received a special exemption into the tournament.

The 2013 Watson Challenge will be held June 7-9 at the National Golf Club of Kansas City in Parkville, Mo.
