MANHATTAN, Kan. – Incoming freshman Connor Knabe cruised to a six-stroke victory after carding a 2-under 140 to win the 2013 Heartland Junior Amateur at the Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club in Overland Park, Kan., on Tuesday. With the win, Knabe earned a spot in the 2013 Watson Challenge, the Kansas City area’s most prestigious golf event.

Knabe finished atop the leaderboard after recording five front-nine birdies over the final round to top second-place finisher Matt Barry by six shots. The Leawood, Kan., native will join the Wildcat men’s golf team in the fall after a successful prep career at Shawnee Mission East High School in suburban Kansas City.

The Watson Challenge is a 54-hole stoke play championship that combines the Kansas City area’s best amateur and professional golfers, along with the event’s namesake, PGA Tour great, Tom Watson. Knabe will be joined in the field by fellow incoming freshman JP Derksen and future teammate Conner Schrock.  Former K-State golfers Joe Ida, the event’s defending champion, and recent graduate Curtis Yonke, who received a special exemption into the tournament, will also be a part of this year’s field.

Information and event scoring can be found at www.kansascitygolfer.org, while updates on current and former Wildcat golfers will be available at kstatesports.com throughout the summer.

The 2013 Watson Challenge will be held June 7-9 at the National Golf Club of Kansas City in Parkville, Mo.
