Sept. 13, 2013
MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State men's golf team will open the 2013-14 season as it travels to Columbia, Mo., Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 16 and 17, to compete in the Regional Preview at The Club at Old Hawthorne. The event will consist of 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday, with both days' action scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
K-State's scoring lineup will be comprised of junior Kyle Weldon, seniors Daniel Wood, Alex Carney and David Klaudt and freshman Seth Smith. Senior Tyler Norris will be competing as an individual.
"Our team looks to be playing well," said head coach Tim Norris. "We have three seniors and a junior with the best summer resume in the top 5 along with a very talented freshman. From an experience standpoint I feel very good. There is not a lot that these returning players have not seen before.
"The Missouri Open was just held at Old Hawthorne last week and reports are the course is in great shape. We will be paired with Missouri the first day and I see that as an advantage. If our guys can stay close to the Tigers in their group on Monday, we should be in good shape for the final round."
Weldon's second season in Manhattan was highlighted by a victory-sealing putt on the final hole of the 2012 Pacific Invitational, a long birdie-putt that gave the Wildcats their second team win of the year. After tallying a 73.60 stroke average and two top-10 finishes, Weldon capped his sophomore campaign by tying for 14th place in the 2013 Big 12 Championship.
After a two-year mission in the Dominican Republic and a redshirt season, Wood put together a solid junior season in 2012-13 as he ranked near the top of most statistical categories for the Wildcats, including events played (12), stroke average (73.47) and low 18-hole score (65). Wood tallied two top-20 finishes as a junior, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 2012 Jim Colbert Intercollegiate.
Carney competed in four events last season, including three as a part of the Wildcat scoring lineup. As a junior, he carded a 75.41 stroke average while recording two top-20 finishes.
Klaudt was a member of the K-State scoring lineup twice last year while he also competed as an individual three times. His best finish came in the 2012 Jim Colbert Intercollegiate where he fired an 11-over 227 to tie for sixth place. Along with Weldon and Wood, Klaudt was named a captain for the 2013-14 season.
A product of St. Louis, Mo., Smith comes to K-State after a heralded prep career at Ladue Horton Watkins High School where he was a three-time all-state, four-time all-conference and four-time all-metro honoree. Smith was named the No. 1 golfer in Missouri by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard as he recorded three top-10 finishes in AJGA events during the summer of 2012.
Norris played in four events last year, carding one top-20 finish and a 77.77 stroke average.
In addition to the Wildcats, the event field will include Austin Peay, Iowa State, Louisiana, Memphis, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, San Francisco, South Alabama and Tulsa.
