OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Kansas State freshman golfer Matt Green carded five birdies during the final round of play on his way to a third-place finish in the 2012 Bill Ross Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,054-yard Milburn Country Club. Tuesday’s result marked the second top-five finish for Green this season as he finished in third place at the season-opening Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic in early September.
“Matt really played a solid tournament,” said head coach Tim Norris. “There was a sequence of three holes today, the 16th, 17th and 18th holes, where if he would have played them a little differently, he would have definitely had a shot to post a winning score because the leaders were right in front of him. But I was very, very impressed with how Matt handled the whole 54 holes.”
Green started the final round of play in a three-way tie for sixth place but was able to move up the leaderboard by firing an even-par 72, the third-lowest score of the day, on the final 18 holes of competition.
Playing as an individual alongside teammate Tyler Norris, Green opened the event with a first-round 2-under 70, on his way to overall score of 1-under 215. The Lenexa, Kan., native finished five shots behind Arkansas State’s Easton Key, who won the event with a 6-under 210.
Norris, who finished in a tie for 42nd place, carded a second-round 1-over 73, his lowest 18-hole score of the year, on the way to an 11-over 227. In addition to the lowest 18-hole score of the season, Norris also recorded season-best marks in 36- and 54-hole scores.
“Tyler did not have a great day today, but yesterday he had a good afternoon where he made a couple of birdies,” said Coach Norris. “It was a good experience, and now we have to get ready to get ready for the upcoming tournament in New Mexico.”
K-State will have this week off as it prepares for the 2012 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday, October 22 and 23, at the New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
