Kansas State Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach Deb Patterson
"This is a disappointing loss but an improvement from our basketball team. To an extent I am really pleased with the growth that I saw from us competitively, relative to early in the game when we were a little streaky and a tad inconsistent in the second half for a spurt or two and that really cost us. I think our team played hard tonight and communicated well. We really struggled to hit open threes. If you just hit two or three of the open threes then it is a different ball game. It is disappointing to lose and I do not want to act like it is not, but there is a silver lining and that is that this team stepped up and competed at a Big 12 level."
On her team's turnover problems...
"We went through a segment where we got sloppy and got a little indecisive and when we got that way it leads to turnovers that make you scratch your head. You can see it coming. I liked that we recovered from it, but we recovered too late and unfortunately for us they ended up with 13 points off of turnovers and that can be a game changer in a tight basketball game. The reality is we had 20 open looks from the three point line. If we get better at hitting those, we will get some victories in the Big 12 season."
On guarding Oklahoma State...
"I think part of it with Oklahoma State is the longer that you struggle offensively, the more you have some empty possessions and the more you have turnovers in the second half and that led to them gaining confidence. Turnovers lead to a lot of pressure on your defense. I feel like that we were defending them extremely well by and large. They have good balance and a good inside-outside game. I really felt defensively we were really good until we lost our step offensively. Then we had a lack of confidence on the defensive end and let some run outs happen off of steals and a couple of penetrations. Three or four soft possession from us is what really set us back."
On the upcoming `Pack the House' night against Iowa State...
"I was just thinking about it this week. We were talking about `Pack the House' and talking about Iowa State. Our fans have really been good to us. We had a great crowd against Baylor. We had people come out tonight knowing we were playing a Top-25 team. The record aside, I think everyone understands that this team will show up and fight. It is a team that will represent Kansas State extremely well. With their fight, their energy and their passion, we really want to put the word out to our fans that if we can paint the house with purple that it will be at the very top of our heart. This is a great rivalry, Iowa State is one of the hottest teams in the country and it should be a tremendous challenge for us and a great environment for us."
Kansas State Player Quotes
Senior forward Chantay Caron
On playing both halves equally...
"I think we are getting there. We have been working hard at practice and we talked about it at half time about coming out hard in the second half. We just have to work a little bit harder and not have as many turnovers in the second half, and we will be there."
Junior guard Ashia Woods
On what makes Oklahoma State so difficult...
"I would say their transition play was one of the things that we focused on a lot in practice and how they push the ball up the floor. They are good at that. I would have to say that one thing that put us back was the soft possessions in the second half. It is just like Coach Patterson said, that stretch where we did not attack, we just struggled a little bit."
On improvement of the team. . .
"I felt like our team never really backed down, and we played well. It was definitely an improvement from our last game, and we are getting there. We are just not quite there."
On what Pack the House night means to the team...
"It would mean a lot to us. We definitely get a lot of energy and momentum when we know we have a lot of fans there cheering for us. It would be great to just see all the purple in the stands, and knowing that we have our sixth man being our fans."
Oklahoma State Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach Jim Littell
"Obviously we are excited to come in here and get a win. Any win on the road in the Big 12 is crucial to your cause. I thought we played extremely tight to start the game and struggled a little bit at the end. Coach Patterson always has her teams so well prepared defensively that it is no mystery why she has won so many games here. I thought they did a great job defensively and kept us out of sync on some things. We had some players make plays at the end, and that is what it takes to win games like this. Kendra Suttles came off the bench and responded. I think she had 11 straight points, and that was the difference in the ballgame. It went from probably tied to a 10 point lead when she was in the game. That is what seniors are supposed to do, and she played extremely well tonight."
On K-State coming out strong in the second half...
"Coach Patterson always recruits shooters here and we knew that we dodged a bullet a little bit in the first half when they were 1-12. We knew that they were going to make some threes. They just have too many shooters not to. To have them go 4-23, I think we did a good job of guarding them from the three point line. They made too much at the end on direct drives to the basket giving up easy opportunities. I thought from the 15 minute mark to the five minute mark in the second half, we did a nice job guarding."
On Kendra Suttles' play in the second half...
"To be honest, she has struggled and not played very well. We took her out of the starting rotation and sometimes you have to do that to motivate young people. I think she was motivated that she wanted her position back."
