Kansas State Head and Player Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening Statement…
“I think overall, I was significantly more pleased with our competitive disposition than the prior four 40-minute games that we have played in Big 12 play. I felt really good about that coming off the floor, but a loss is a loss and you never feel great about losing a game. I think we grew up in a lot of areas tonight. Unfortunately, we left a lot of shots out there tonight that were good looks for us but did not drop. My main concern coming into this game was taking acre of the ball at a higher level and rebounding the ball at a higher level and just brining the disposition you have to bring as competitors. I was really pleased with that aspect overall as a team. I know our turnover number was 16, but I felt three of those turnovers were individual snafus where somebody lost their mind. Even though I am disappointed in the loss, I think our team took some positive strides tonight.”

On her team’s performance tonight…
“I think they competed at a higher level. We had some streaks where we made mistakes for a segment in the second half but, all and all, in terms of 40 minute mentality; I thought we were better tonight with missing a boat load of threes. It is easy to get down when you miss shots and I think the game would have taken a much different look if we had knocked down a few more of those three point attempts.”

On K-State’s three-point shooting…
“A lot of those were open looks, and I think we put ourselves in position to put some pressure on them, if we had made those shots. Overall, I thought our shot selection was good. I thought we got a little bit of penetration here and there tonight which was good. You only get a certain number of opportunities to penetrate with their bigs in there, so I was ok with the three point number tonight.”

Senior Guard Brittany Chambers
On K-State’s performance…
“We were just on a run and feeling it. We could not get a ton of easy baskets around the rim against Baylor. I thought our guards did a great job of penetrating and getting our outside shooters great shots. That got us within five but we did not end the half exactly how we wanted to. Then we came into the second half and Baylor is good and we knew they were going to make runs, but I thought we held our composure and got back on track. We played the rest of the second half like we wanted to.”

On K-State’s rebounding performance…
“I thought we did a great job crashing the boards, which is something we put a great deal of emphasis on. We are not nearly as big as Baylor so we needed our guards and smaller players to really step it up on the boards. A lot of times in last games, we have been disappointed in the fact that we have had two or three of our players go back when we can send all five to the boards. We need to continue to work harder, player harder and try to get those second chance points. I thought we did a good job of that tonight.”

Baylor Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On how the game went…
“First off give credit to Kansas State. They spread the floor on you, and they wanted to bring Brittney (Griner). They made a lot of shots. In the second half we made a few adjustments. I thought we settled down a little bit, and made adjustments obviously on the defensive end. It is another road win. I do not like the fact that we gave up 69 points. They shot almost 50 threes, so I guess you are going to give up that many points when they shoot that many threes.”

On Brittney Griner…
“Brittney is an athlete. When you talk about post play, they are stuck in the mold of all they can cover is all that area in the paint. Brittney can really get out and give ball pressure. She can just get out there if she has to because she has a long reach. If she gets beat, she really does not get beat because she can swat it from behind. What we saw tonight was not new. We knew that they were going to do it. They do it against all teams, not just us. We made sure in the second half that we take her too far away from help side like the first half.”

Senior Center Brittney Griner
On playing defense in this game…
“Knowing how to help my team out. Also knowing where my man is so I can figure out how to block the shot. I just need to put a hand up and adjust the shot. That is the biggest thing.“
