Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening statement…
“Just really proud of our basketball team tonight. It was K-State fight, K-State intensity, and K-State teamwork. I felt like everyone was dialed in and that was as good as a game I could ask this team to compete. I could not be any happier, just not about the victory but how we competed for 40 minutes. What we were talking about after the Kansas game was too improve and I think you can see how much improvement we have made in the past couple of days just with understanding the competitive intensity that we are capable of playing with. It was just a really wonderful effort and I am proud of everyone and how they competed today.”

On how Kansas State adjusted defensively…
“I think it was the kind of game where you felt like those last minutes of the game were going to stretch on and on. Oklahoma was starting to get a few isolations inside and was starting to get a few isolations to the rim. So beginning to change the tempo a little bit became critical. Our team did great job with the press—we had aggressiveness and we had intelligence. Again, we had great focus and played great basketball. I felt like they played to the level individually they are capable of.”

On defending Aaryn Ellenberg….
“When we were at Oklahoma, I felt like Ashia (Woods) did a tremendous job on (Aaryn) Ellenberg. She got loose and made shots late in that game but I do not think her numbers were indicative of how well she was defended by Ashia. Tonight we guarded her with Ashia, Kindred (Wesemann) and additionally (Breanna) Craig. So I think the different looks and the accountability of each of the young people brought were very important to our success—that is just what we have been looking for. Know your job, be very attentive to it, and get it done. You know you are guarding a great player. I thought we did a great job with it. Each player did a good job guarding her—you never thought, ‘wow we have to get her off of that matchup.’ They defended extremely by committee.”

On how long it has been since K-State has beaten Oklahoma…
“Yes knew as a staff. We did not talk to the team about it until after the game. I think that was when the dinosaurs were roaming the Earth.”

Junior forward Ashia Woods
On how she felt when her three-point play sealed the game…
“It felt really good just to know that we were going to win. As a team the players knew how long it has been since we have beat Oklahoma as well.”

Freshman guard Kindred Wesemann
On how she felt with the increase playing time with Leticia Romero…
“I liked it. Leticia and I feed off of each other. Whenever we feed off of each other there is a good chance that the ball is going to go into the hole. We had really great ball movement tonight between me and Leticia and the whole team.”

Senoir forward Katya Leick
On having both Romero and Wesemann on the court at the same time…
“I really like it, the ball movement was really great tonight. Both of them bring so much energy and athleticism to the court.”

On what this game means heading into Iowa State…
“It is all about momentum. Today just showed that we are going to grinding and keep working and we are going to keep pushing and holding each other accountable. We as team have a goal and in order to achieve those goals we have to keep winning games. Tonight you could really see we really enjoyed playing. We had fun, we competed.”

Oklahoma Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Sherri Coale
On full court pressure…
“I do not think that was the difference in the game. Obviously we turned it over once against it. I do not think that was the difference in the game. The difference in the game was the way we defended. We did not defend with confidence or energy. Even though we got 23 points from Nicole Griffin, our post play was not what it should have been offensively or defensively and we deserve this one. K-State played great. I do not want to take anything away from them. Anytime you make 11 three’s and anytime you are 23-of-31 from the free throw line, you are going to beat a lot of people. There is no doubt about that. I am disappointed in our lack of attention to detail and the game plan we did not follow.”

On K-State’s defense on Aaryn Ellenberg…
“I am not sure how much was K-State and how much it was Ellenberg. She was not even close on some of the shots—which is not like her. It was a really strange three point night for her. I think on the first couple possessions she forced it and shot it really early. She has not been doing that at all, but then I thought later on she let it come to her. She was not even close and that is going to happen sometimes.”

On the play of freshman Leti Romero…
“She is a talented freshman. She is a really good freshman. She ducks her head and goes to the rim and it is a free throw.”
