Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes
Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening statement…
“To our credit we played a much higher energy game than a game ago. It was good to come off a second half like we did a game ago and compete like we did tonight. It was wonderful to see individual players step up at different critical times in the game and really compete as a team. I felt like we did what we needed to do possession by possession to manage the game in a positive way. It was great to see how hard we competed and how smart we were. We made mistakes, but we bounced back from them. I felt like it was a complete team effort tonight. We had great resiliency. We had two teams playing extremely hard. This was just a great victory for us.”

On the low scoring in the first half…
“We had taken a day off and had not paid a lot of attention to the practice prior because Ball State is a very adept and smart on the offensive end, so we spent a lot of time in Ball State’s scouting and did not give our team an opportunity to get their feet on the floor, I would say about five minutes worth. They expected that we may get out of the gates slow and sometimes you have to get a feel together and get a feel of the game. I felt like that happened tonight. That was not unexpected and did not panic me at all because I had confidence in the attention our team brought to the shoot-around today. I think they understood after watching tape on Ball State that this was a high quality, smart basketball team that we had to be on edge to beat. The start was a little slow, but I never thought we would be in panic mode because of it.”

On Ball State’s turnovers in the first half…
“We got some easy baskets that gave us energy and confidence. I feel like that is big. We have to find a way to get some easy baskets and we did that tonight. The physicality we brought I felt was very, very good. We brought toughness and we have to do that in postseason play. I think the numbers defensively speak to that. I think in the second half offensively, we wasted a lot of opportunities to finish our shots, but by and large, I felt our shots were good but did not go in.”

Senior Guard Brittany Chambers
On her confidence building after making some shots…
“Ball State’s defense was very aggressive, more so than we have faced in a while and I think that we have not really seen that look. We were hesitant and made our job way more difficult at the beginning because we were not taking our shots that we would normally take. All five of us can shoot the 3-point shot while we are out there. It is important that early in the game we take them. Their defense had to lay back a bit. Personally, I felt like I needed to get a feel for the game. I started to kind of force it a little bit, but thankfully backed off from that right away. The coaches got on us and told us that the shot was not there and we found some other ways to score and that eventually came along.”

On the pressure of winning more games in the WNIT Tournament…
“I do not think it is pressure. I do not really think we are feeling pressure at this point. I think we are just feeling extremely blessed to still be playing at this point. We thought our season was done. We just look at every game as an opportunity to play together, learn together and be on this court. We are trying not to take anything for granted and are lucky to stay here again for the next game. It does get tougher every game that you win. I am not feeling a lot of pressure and I think that is what is resonating from the team. This is just a feeling of opportunity.”

Sophomore Guard Haley Texada
On her consistency throughout the WNIT Tournament…
“I had a meeting with Coach Patterson about a week ago and she told me to have a lot of energy and I felt with that, everything else would take care of itself. I felt that if you have a lot of energy on defense, the offense will take care of itself and will automatically be there. That is just how it has felt and the girls do an awesome job offensively of getting the ball and I have been passing the ball when it is open.”
