Kansas State Coach Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening statement…
“It feels good to get that first game under our belts. There were a lot of new faces in the gym, a new system, a smaller team on the floor and a lot of new things we were trying to learn. I am happy to have the chance to get on the floor against a very well-coached Fort Hays State team. I liked the opportunity that we had to compete against a 6-foot-4 body because heaven knows we are going to see one of those every game. There were a lot of things that we had the opportunity to learn from, not just from our time on the floor tonight, but also relative to the film study that we will have a chance to bring to practice.”

On shaking off early-season rust …
“The first few games and early in the season it is really about baby stepping. There is always a lot of nerves, over thinking and learning that is going on in this stage. So, I was not at all concerned about our start relative to any prior expectation that I had. My mindset was ‘let us just take the floor and see where we are at.’”

On breaking in so many new players …
“I liked the attention they brought in trying to do things our way. I think at this stage in the season a lot of times you are not thinking a lot. You are not nearly as well conditioned. Things are surprising you and what you have been taught was a two on a scale of 100. I just like the attentiveness that I thought our players brought to trying to do what we taught in the period of time we had to practice.”

On working new players in the offense…
“I think they did a nice job. I think we will continue to establish chemistry to understand a little bit more about each other and where we want to put one another on the floor. There is literally so much we are learning just about the system. So, it is a lot right now. But by and large our players worked very hard to play to their individual strengths and to put their teammates in position to perform well.”

On tonight’s game against FHSU …
“We are a little more athletic than they are, and I thought we amped up our aggressiveness. I think right now we are a little bit cautious and learning and reacting to the better part of the game versus being aggressive and putting the offense on their heels. There was a segment tonight where we just got super aggressive, and we fed off of Ashia (Woods) and Brittany (Chambers) a lot. I thought Chantay (Caron) did well. She is going to be undersized all year, and it is physical play. But I think that is going to assist us, and she did a great job of that.”

On what her team can learn from tonight’s win …
“Honestly as we head into the Washburn game, we will take every minute of this game and we can learn from them. Every minute of every game is very positive for your young players in terms of feeling tempo and what it is like to have to begin to perform under pressure. So, I feel really good that so many players had that opportunity tonight because there is nothing like playing. So, tonight was the first step, and there is no element of the game that we will not continue to work on. We will work to build off of this game. We are going to be the kind of team that chips away and learn a great deal throughout the season. I know players will come in with a sense to play even harder tomorrow, and we will learn how to play smarter as a group.”

On her team’s defensive performance against FHSU…
“I think we saw some good help defense tonight in some close situations. Ashia Woods has really great instincts defensively. She can really impact the game in a lot of different ways both with her length and her instincts. She reminds me a lot of Marlies Gipson, who was a really intelligent defender, who timed what she did and how she did it. Ashia is very adept and has a great basketball IQ. I think that makes the people around her better. Brittany (Chambers) never gives up on a play. Chantay (Caron) is willing to play physical. I think those three created a lot of opportunities for us. We are more athletic than Fort Hays State so you could expect that tonight, but most nights out we will not be as athletic as the team we are playing. We just need to keep building off of those positives.”

Kansas State Player Quotes

Senior Guard Brittany Chambers
On the first game of the year…
“That was huge. I think that the first game is always nerves, with the newcomers coming in. There were just nerves everywhere in the first game. It is kind of like everyone was anxious to get on the court and get going and not knowing what to expect because practice and games are different things. I felt like our team held our composure very well tonight. It did not start off as we wanted being down most of the first half, but we held our composure and did not panic. That is good to see, especially with a young team on the court. I am very proud of how our team battled, when things were going wrong and shots were not getting hit, we would get second chance points and doing anything we can to keep fighting.”

Sophomore Guard Ashia Woods
On tonight’s game…
“We had a lot of newcomers on the court. Everything was new to everyone. Everyone’s position was different, so we composed our self very well. We handled what they threw at us pretty well. I felt like, as a team, we did pretty good.”

Junior Forward Chantay Caron
On the height difference …
“Like what coach Patterson said, we are going to see that every game. Having the first game out is very nice, we can work on our team defense together. So seeing that was pretty good for us.”

Fort Hays State Coach Quotes

Head Coach Tony Hobson

Overall game…
“There are some things we need to work on.  I think that they will be easily correctable.  We did not turn them over a lot. They are playing three or four guards, so I knew that we would not be able to do that very much.  I think that if we could pressure these guys then we will be set for the regular season.”

On growth of the team...
“I think that it is a fair assessment to say that our team will grow throughout the season.  We played like a freshmen team, but I think they still played just fine.  Growth will be essential for this team.”

On defense…
“With a set defense like this, you just cannot attack.  You do it if you reverse the ball one or two times and change sides of the floor, then that is when you attack, but we were trying to attack after one pass maybe two.  That got us in trouble.  It took good passes.  I thought we dominated, but we probably also turned it over on the entry passes to the post.”
