MANHATTAN, Kan. – Hot shooting from the three-point line and a strong defensive presence propelled K-State to a 75-42 win over Washburn in the Wildcats’ final exhibition game on Monday night.
Kansas State was led by 2012-13 preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection Brittany Chambers, who narrowly missed a triple-double with game-highs of 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. She also added four steals to her final stat line.
Joining Chambers in double figures were freshman Brianna Craig and sophomore Ashia Woods. Craig tallied 17 points, including a 4-of-5 effort from beyond the arc, while Woods notched 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
For the game, K-State was 11-of-34 from the three-point line. The Wildcats also forced Washburn into 27 turnovers with Kansas State notching 29 points off those turnovers.
With the aid of five connections from the beyond the arc, K-State sprinted to a decisive 19-2 run to open the second half and lead the Lady Blues, 47-19, with 15:13 to play. Craig connected on three from beyond the arc, while Ashia Woods and Chantay Caron each added one.
For the second half, K-State was 8-of-18 from the three-point line and 17-of-35 from the field.
K-State jumped out to an 11-0 lead to open the game, as Chambers scored six of K-State’s first 11 points. During the game-opening run by the Wildcats, Washburn was 0-of-4 from the field and K-State forced the Lady Blues into six turnovers.
Washburn settled in and used a 10-1 run during a five-minute stretch of the first half to close to within two, 12-10, with 9:50 to play. K-State ended the Lady Blues’ rally on a three-point field goal from Brianna Craig with 7:43 to play and boosted the Wildcats’ lead to 15-10. The Craig three ended a seven-minute stretch without a field goal by the Wildcats.
Before the end of the first half, K-State used a 13-5 run to hold a 28-17 halftime lead. During the run, K-State was bolstered by Kendra Spresser with seven points.
Washburn was paced by Laura Kinderknecht with 12 points, while Dana Elliott pulled in nine rebounds.
Kansas State will open its 2012-13 regular season on Friday, as the Wildcats host Idaho State at 5:30 p.m. Friday is a “Wildcat Weekend,” as fans can purchase a women’s general admission ticket for just $3 when showing a men’s ticket from the North Dakota game later that night.
