EL PASO, Texas – Kansas State came out with a sluggish start and UTEP took full advantage on Saturday afternoon at the Don Haskins Center. The Miners clubbed the Wildcats 84-39 in K-State’s first road game of the season.

K-State (2-1) was paced by redshirt freshman Kelly Thomson and freshman Breanna Lewis. Thomson registered a career-high 15 points on a career-best five 3-point field goals and also pulled in a career-high three rebounds.

Lewis notched a career-high 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting and pulled in five rebounds off the bench.

UTEP (3-0) saw five players reach double figures led by senior forward Kayla Thornton with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Redshirt senior center notched 12 points and six rebounds.

UTEP raced out to a 13-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the first half. The Wildcats started the game 0-of-7 from the field. Breanna Lewis finally put the Wildcats on the board with four points from 13:12 to 11:08 of the first half.

The Miners were unfazed by K-State’s four points and used Wildcat turnovers and missed shots to secure a 30-4 lead with 8:15 to play in the first half. UTEP continued to assault the Wildcats, finishing the half with a 33-point lead, 46-13. The 46 first half points were the most allowed by the Wildcats since Iowa State tallied 51 points on Feb. 9, 2013.

In the second half, Thomson caught fire from beyond the arc and tallied four 3-point field goals on four straight K-State possessions.

This was the largest margin of defeat for K-State since dropping a 72-26 decision to Connecticut in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament on March 19, 2012.
