Wichita State at Kansas State
Kansas State Head Coach Player Quotes

Head coach Deb Patterson
Opening statement…
“From our point of view, I think we are just still more attentive, a beat or two behind our opponent, and I think we saw that over the past two games. Wichita State was very aggressive off the dribble as we expected. There was a lot of movement in their offense, and we have sort of been in response mode defensively in the last two games. We were still trying to figure things out offensively. It was obviously a great win for Wichita State on the road. For us, the main priority is working to keep getting better. Interestingly enough, I think we defended better overall in the second half, but their percentage was off the hook from the floor because the shots they got were breakdown, one-on-one penetration where we let them get to the rim. There is a lot to learn from the game, but that is what the preseason is all about. We will step in the gym tomorrow ready to work on all the things that we saw that continue to give us problems.”

On the difference of the first two games to the last two…
“We played two aggressive, confident basketball teams. We did not necessarily respond with a lot of composure in the early phases of the game. We had some early turnovers, and defensively we were a little responsive early in the game tonight. We just did not bring that super aggressiveness, and we made our first mistake right at the opening tip. There are many mistakes we have to learn from. We just have not started games with the aggressiveness that we need. Starting with mistakes can put you on your heels, missing a couple easy lay-ups, and before you know it you are climbing out of a hole.”

On the message to her young team…
“There are two different messages. I thought against UTEP, we really did not compete, and we did not engage the game mentally at all. Tonight, I thought we brought the effort. We did not necessarily bring the execution that we needed. So the message is about continuing to learn. We have to keep working to get better, analyze where we need to grow individually. We just have to get in the gym and work to improve. I really appreciate playing teams like Wichita State and UTEP because they are well-coached teams. They play extremely hard, and they have a high level of confidence and athleticism. They really put the defense on their heels, and obviously we had a hard time offensively which is always the last to come for us. We are playing good teams, and we are lining up in hopes that every experience is a chance for you to get better, even if you fail.”

Sophomore Guard Bri Craig
On each player’s role and how they affect the team…
“I do not think it is necessarily just roles. I think it is just getting the ball to the open person. I felt tonight we were trying to force a lot of things inside when we had a lot of people on the outside that were open. I think that is us becoming more aware of our offense and getting into it.”

Senior Forward Chantay Caron
On her and Craig’s ability to come into the game and change momentum…
“I think both of us being here for a couple years has helped us. We know what Coach Patterson is expecting on the defensive end, and we are able to watch and know what needs to be fixed. So I think that is a good thing for both of us.”

Wichita State Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Jody Adams
Opening statement…
“I am really proud of our team after we took a couple of losses here lately. The one at Oklahoma and the one at home against St. Joe’s, which are two ranked teams. We did not do some things very well and they were some things that were controllable. One of those things that we did very well tonight was hitting the boards. We played at the tempo that we wanted to tonight. It was nice to see us put together a complete ballgame and to see this club do what they do best.”

On the rebounding…
“It is just something that we know that we can do well. We have the athletes and the athleticism. We have very skilled posts and if our tempo is not matched then we just give the extra effort. That is something that we preach on is hard work and competing.”

On Michelle Price...
“She has the quickest hands that I have ever seen. She gets up the floor unbelievably quick. She is just crafty around the rim. If you do not know how to guard that or do not know how to keep up with that tempo, it is going to be tough to guard her. She is an undersized post, so posts who are not used to that type of player do not know how to guard her. That is just the way we recruit.”

Senior Forward Michelle Price
On her performance today…
“It felt great. I honestly had no clue that I had that many points. I was so focused on the game plan, I just kept rebounding with my teammates. Just going to the basket and seeing the floor.”

On scoring 25 points…
“It was the first time I have ever scored that many in college. It is very special to me, I have never done it before and I know with me being a scorer now that it is my main role and I am going to try and continue to do it each game.”
