MANHATTAN, Kan. – With a career-high effort last Wednesday in an upset win over No. 5 Texas A&M, Kansas State’s Brittany Chambers earned her second career Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Player of the Week citation on Sunday afternoon. This was the 24th time that a Wildcat has earned the weekly Big 12 honor and the third this season to earn the distinction.
Chambers shared the honor with Baylor’s Brittney Griner, while Oklahoma’s Aaryn Ellenberg earned the league’s Freshman of the Week citation. Chambers is K-State’s first two-time recipient of the league’s weekly honor since Kendra Wecker earned three citations during the 2004-05 campaign. This is the third time in the last four seasons that a Wildcat has earned the final Player of the Week honor from the league.
The Jordan, Minn., native propelled Kansas State to a pair of wins last week, including a 71-67 upset of No. 5 Texas A&M and a 56-51 victory at Kansas that helped secure the fourth seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship. Against the Aggies, Chambers recorded a career-high 35 points on 11-of-19 shooting with a career-high 7-of-12 from beyond the arc. The sophomore guard was 6-of-8 from the foul line, pulled down four rebounds and dished out four assists.
Her 35 points ranks tied for fifth in school history for a single game and was the highest single game output since Kendra Wecker set the school record with 41 points against Illinois State on Nov. 26, 2004. Chambers became the first player in school history to record two 30+ point efforts in the same season against conference foes. She is just the fifth player in school history to record two 30+ point efforts in the same season. During the contest, Chambers set the season school record for three-point field goals made by a sophomore, with 81 this season.
At Kansas, Chambers registered nine points, a team-high nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Her nine points moved her into fifth in school history for points in a season by a sophomore with 468. Her nine rebounds were the most since she pulled in 11 against Nebraska on Jan. 22.
Chambers joins Mariah White as K-State’s two recipients this season to earn the Big 12 Conference’s weekly award. This is the first time since the 2004-05 season that K-State has earned the weekly honor three times in a season.
