WELLINGTON, Fla. – Kansas State equestrian rider Sarah Mershon rode past riders from Delaware State and Fresno State in the first two rounds of the Collegiate Equitation Challenge before falling in the first Championship round to her counterpart from Baylor.

Mershon was one of four competitors that advanced to the championship rounds out of the original field of 16 riders. Taylor Brown of Baylor won the Flat portion of the event with a combined score of 164.

"I am so proud of Sarah and how she rode today,” said K-State Hunt Seat coach Casey Finnell. “This was a tough competition and an intimidating environment here at the Winter Equestrian Festival. She had some great rounds and also gained some valuable experience. This is such a great experience, and we are so grateful to all of the volunteers and sponsors who help put this competition on."

The Flower Mound, Texas, product opened the event by knocking off Delaware State rider Caroline Foltz, 80-68, to move onto the second round where she rode past Fresno State’s Hillary West, 65-62.

In the first championship round, Mershon was bested by Lisa Goldman of Baylor, 80-60, to close out the event for the K-State sophomore.

“I am so honored to have been able to represent Kansas State here at the Winter Equestrian Festival,” said Mershon. “It was an amazing experience to ride with such amazing riders and talented horses. It was a great learning experience."

Mershon and the rest of the Wildcats will next be back in action on March 2 as they head to College Station, Texas to take on the third-ranked Texas A&M Aggies. Check back with kstatesports.com for details and information regarding the K-State equestrian team.
