COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No.5 Kansas State Equestrian team opened the 2013-14 season with a loss on Friday, after dropping a 15-5 decision to No.3 South Carolina.

"Congratulations to USC on their win today,” said head coach Casie Maxwell. “Their riders were extremely prepared and rode very well. I can say without reservation that our team went out and rode the hardest they ever have for the first meet of the season. Their confidence and aggression was outstanding and what we want to build on for the rest of the season. We had a few errors which kept us from a few of our points, so I expect to see those riders adjust their plan for tomorrow's competitions. We look forward to adjusting from our mistakes and having the opportunity to continue building momentum in two road meets tomorrow."

The Hunter Seat team was bested 8-2 by the Gamecocks.

Captain Rachel Webster picked up the lone point for her team in Equitation on the Flat, defeating Kelsey Hart, 82-77. Freshman Alexis Graves had a successful Wildcat debut, knocking off Emily Reynolds, 79-76, in Equitation Over Fences.

K-State’s Western team fell to USC, 7-3.

In Horsemanship, the Wildcats were led by Chayna DeNicolo and Kelly Bovaird. DeNicolo gave K-State their first point after taking down Kelsey Urban, 76-73. Bovaird answered with a strong ride of her own, giving her team another point with her 77-76.5 victory over Sam Chiodo. Freshman Alyssa Lombardi scored an exhibition win by besting Bailey Mierzejewski, 75.5-73.5. Kara Guy earned the Wildcat’s only point in Reining after just narrowly defeating Cody McMillian, 67-66.5.

The Wildcats will look to bounce back on Saturday as the team travels to Dover, Del., for a showdown with Delaware State.
