STILLWATER, Okla. – Junior Rachel Webster continued her impressive campaign by earning her fourth Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) after a strong showing in Equitation Over Fences, but the No. 5 Kansas State dropped its second meet of the year, losing to No. 6 Oklahoma State, 15-7 (1803.5-1716), on Saturday. The loss ends a six-match winning streak for the Wildcats (6-2, 1-1 Big 12).
Head coach Casie Maxwell saw some encouraging things from her team today to head into the spring semester.
“In general, the team rode really well,” Maxwell said. “They came out and rode for a win, but it did not work in our favor, but that does not take away from the quality of athletes that we have on our roster.”
The day started out with Equitation Over Fences, which saw both teams ride to a 3-3 tie. Sophomore Madison Wayda gave the Wildcats the first point of the day, scoring an 80 to best her OSU counterpart. Junior Shana Barnett earned a point, edging out Emily Hartly of OSU, 75-74. Webster had the best ride of the day, scoring an 86, on her way to her MOP. Senior Katie Haukos picked up an exhibition win on the day.
In Equitation on the Flat, K-State was unable to continue its strong form, dropping the discipline, 4-1, in favor of the Cowgirls. Wayda picked up the lone point for the Wildcats. Her two wins on the day pushed her season record to 7-4.
Webster was happy with her MOP honor, but saw some room for improvement.
“I thought today went really well,” Webster said. “We have some things to work on, but I think as a team we really went for it and really rode to win, the points just did not fall our way.”
The Western side saw tough competition between the two sides, but OSU was able to come out on top, 8-3.
In Reining, both teams had great rides, but the Cowgirls edged out K-State, 3-2. Freshman Kara Guy gave the Wildcats the initial lead, scoring the first point in the event, 70.5-69.5. Junior Jesse Johnson registered the other point for K-State, with a 68-66 win over Erin Willoughby.
Horsemanship was the last discipline on the day, with the Cowgirls coming out on top, 5-1. Senior Hannah Ribera scored the lone point for the Wildcats. Her score of 76 was enough to beat Mackenzie Fugitt, who scored a 72.5. Freshman Danielle Kemper earned an exhibition win, beating Oklahoma State’s Katie Ralph, 74.5-69.5.
K-State ends the fall portion of the season with an overall record of 6-2. The Wildcats’ spring season will start on Feb. 1, as the team travels to Fresno, Calif., for meets against Fresno State and Auburn.
