MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 6 Kansas State women’s equestrian team opens the 2013 spring season with a pair of meets in Fresno, Calif., on Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats will match-up against No. 2 Auburn and Fresno State.
Head coach Casie Maxwell and her squad are ready to get back into action with a great opportunity this weekend.
“Our team is anxious to get on the road and get this Spring season started,” Maxwell said. “We have been back in practice for three weeks now and everyone is riding really well. We plan to continue with the confidence we built in the fall season and focus on minimizing errors while we are on the road.”
The Hunter seat team will be led by captains Meredith Finch and Rachel Webster. Finch, a senior from Somerville, Ohio, will look to begin her collegiate finale on the right foot. Finch compiled a 7-0-1 record in Equitation on the Flat.
Webster, a junior from Mechanicsville, Va., will provide veteran leadership on a tough road trip. The junior earned an impressive 13 wins while competing in both Equitation Over Fences and Equitation on the Flat while earning four Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors.
The Western side looks to build off a steady fall season. Captains Sam Etsell and Kelly Bovaird lead an experienced squad into the weekend’s meets. Etsell, a senior from Arlington, Wash., starts her final spring season, looking to build off of a 4-3 fall record.
Bovaird, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., was a staple in the Horsemanship discipline, garnering a
4-1-2 record. She sits one victory away from her 30th career win.
The two meets will provide an excellent chance for Maxwell’s team to face off against two strong teams.
“We have a strong spring schedule and need to start on a strong note this weekend,” said Maxwell.
Results for this weekend’s meets will be posted on kstatesports.com when they are made available. K-State visits Waco on March 1, for a Big 12 match-up with Baylor.
