MANHATTAN, Kan. – After a month-long break, the seventh-ranked Kansas State equestrian team will travel to the Lone Star state to tangle with a pair of the nation’s best squads in second-ranked Texas A&M and fourth-ranked Baylor. The Wildcats will face the Aggies in College Station on Friday before heading north to take on the Bears in Waco on Saturday.
K-State (5-4) is riding a three-match winning streak that dates back to November 19 where the Wildcats knocked off then-No. 4, Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. K-State last faced Texas A&M (7-2) on November 11 and Baylor (8-4) on October 14. Despite taking home two match-MVP awards on the day against Texas A&M and a Western team victory over Baylor, K-State was unable to take down either squads.
With the Big 12 Championships approximately a month away, K-State will look to take down the conference’s two top schools to gain momentum as the postseason nears.
The Wildcat Western team will be led into action by juniors Hannah Ribera and Whitney Unkefer. Both riders have amassed six wins on the year to go along with three match-MVP awards. Also leading the Western squad will be sophomore Rachel Wetherell. The Linn Grove, Iowa, native ended last month on a two-match winning streak which was enough to earn her NCEA Rider of the Month honors.
Leading K-State’s Hunt Seat team will be junior Larissa Laffey and sophomore Sarah Mershon, who each have earned a team-high seven victories on the season. Laffey has also carded two match-MVP awards in 2011-12 while Mershon has won three-straight matches for the Wildcats.
