K-State Equestrian Prepares for Purple-White Scrimmage

Sep 4, 2013

K-State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan.- The Kansas State Equestrian will provide a preview of its squad for the 2013-14 season on Sunday with the third annual Purple-White scrimmage. The event will begin at 9 a.m., at Timbercreek Stables.

Head coach Casie Maxwell sees the scrimmage as an opportunity to gage where her team is at early in the season.

"It is an opportunity to get everyone on the roster into the arena," said Maxwell. "It will be a good preview of where everybody stands coming into the season. We will get to see what our returners did over the summer in order to prepare for the season and what we need to work on with our freshmen to get them prepared for this format."

The Wildcats are coming off an incredible season which saw the Western team take home its third Reserve National Championship in four years. K-State returns several key riders including team captains Kelly Bovaird, Jordan Cox, Madison Wayda and Rachel Webster. The scrimmage will also be the debuts for Hunter Seat coach Anna Becker and Western coach Kate Chesley.

Wildcat riders will compete in Equitation over Fences, Horsemanship, Equitation on the Flat and Reining. All riders will be riding in one event as the competition will function as a normal, gameday setting with riders competing head-to-head on pre-drawn horses. This format will give each K-State equestrian student-athlete an opportunity to compete in a varsity setting. Rosters for Sunday's scrimmage will be determined by the coaching staff on Saturday.

Admission to Sunday's event is free to the public. K-State will begin the 2013-14 season on the road at South Carolina on Sept. 20, with the team making its home debut on Sept. 29 against Big 12 rival Oklahoma State.
