MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State equestrian team begins the 2012-13 season with a two-day meet against SMU and UT-Martin on Friday and Saturday at Timbercreek Stables. The first day of action will see K-State face off against SMU beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday’s portion of the meet will start at 9 a.m., with SMU riding against UT-Martin followed by K-State versus UT-Martin.

The two meets will give head coach Casie Lisabeth an opportunity to gauge where her team is at.

“We are really looking forward to kicking the season off at home this weekend,” Lisabeth said. “The team is anxious to put their hard work out in the arena and assess what we need to improve on for this semester.”

The Wildcats begin the season ranked seventh in the Women’s Intercollegiate Equestrian National Coaches poll after a strong finish last season. The hunt seat team placed sixth at the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) National Championships in 2012. K-State will have a challenge in its home opener as both SMU and UT-Martin are both receiving votes in the poll.

This will be the first meeting between K-State and SMU since September 25, 2010 when the Wildcats defeated the Mustangs 5-0 in Athens, Ga. Last season K-State and UT-Martin faced off with the Wildcats coming away with the victory.

The Wildcats will have several returning riders in action including seniors Sam Etsell and Meredith Finch and juniors Rachel Webster and Kelly Bovaird, who were elected team captains. Etsell is one of the top Western riders in the Big 12 in her discipline of reining. Last season she was named the Most Outstanding Performer in Reining at the Big 12 Championship while finishing the year with an overall record of 12-3-2.

Finch is coming off a junior year where she was named the Most Outstanding Player for her performance in Equitation on the Flat at the 2012 NCEA National Championships while earning four MVP honors and had a 12-7 record.

Bovaird, a Western rider who will be competing in the Horsemanship discipline, earned two MVP honors and had finished with an impressive 13-4 record last season.

Webster is coming off a sophomore year where she finished with a 9-13 record while earning two MVP honors. She will be competing in equitation on the flat and equitation over fences this weekend.

Admission to Friday and Saturday’s events are free to the public.  The Wildcats will end its homestand on October 5 with a meet against Big 12 opponent Baylor. For complete coverage and results follow
