MANHATTAN, Kan. – The no. 7 Kansas State equestrian team travels to Las Cruces, N.M., for a pair of meets on Friday and Saturday. The team will face off against no. 9 New Mexico State and West Texas A&M.

The Wildcats are coming off an impressive win over no.5 Baylor, 13-7 (1518.5-1482.5), on Oct. 5, to open Big 12 action. The team is looking to continue its two meet winning streak as they travel for its first road meets this year.

Head coach Casie Maxwell thinks that the away meets will prove a sturdy test for her team.

“We are looking forward to trying our team on the road for the first time this season,” Maxwell said. “They have been riding well and making progress each week which is what we need at this point in the season. It will be a great test to get away from home and off of our own horses.”

K-State has battled New Mexico State the past two seasons, with the Wildcats coming out on top in both meets. Last season, the Wildcats soundly defeated the Aggies, 14-6. The Aggies come into the meet with a 2-2 record, but have dropped two straight meets to Baylor and TCU.

The Buffaloes opened the season by hosting two IHSA Western shows. The team finished by earning top honors for both shows.

Leading K-State in  Hunt Seat this season, junior captain Rachel Webster goes into the weekend meet with an impressive 5-1 record on the year including two Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors. Senior captain Meredith Finch has been consistent for K-State, compiling a 3-0 record.

Seniors Kali Yates and Larissa Laffey have also been strong for the Wildcats, racking up  undefeated records of 4-0 and 3-0, respectively. Sophomore Madison Wayda is coming off two straight MOP honors and looks to improve on her 2-3 record. So far this season, K-State has won both Equitation Over Fences and Equitation on the Flat in its two full meets.

On the Western side, senior captain Sam Etsell will lead the Reining discipline for the Wildcats. Etsell is 2-0 and earned her first MOP honor of the season against UT-Martin. Junior captain Kelly Bovaird will lead the Horsemanship side, and look to remain undefeated on the year. Bovaird is 2-0 and also earned her first MOP honor of the season against UT-Martin.

K-State returns to home action on Oct. 20, as the Wildcats take on South Dakota State at Timbercreek Stables.
