MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State women's golf team looks to build on a successful start to the 2012 fall slate as the Wildcats travel to Lawrence, Kan., to compete in the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational Sept. 24-25, at the par-72, 6,636-yard Alvamar Golf Course.
The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday with an 8:15 a.m., shotgun start, while Tuesday's final round will begin at 8 a.m.
"We are looking forward to competing again," said head coach Kristi Knight. "This event will be a good challenge. We have had solid scores in qualifying for this event, and our great distance control will benefit us tremendously."
All seven members of the K-State squad will be competing in the tournament with Carly Ragains, Whitney Pyle, Olivia Eliasson, Gianna Misenhelter and Scotland Preston making up the scoring lineup, while Laura Hildebrandt and Hanna Roos will compete as individuals.
Ragains will lead the Wildcats for the second consecutive week as she comes off a career best sixth-place finish with an 11-over par 227 at the Chip-N-Club Invitational. Misenhelter earned the 10th top-20 finish of her career in the season opener as she carded a 54-hole score of 16-over par 232.
Pyle carded a 20-over par 236 at the Chip-N-Club Invitational to earn a tie for 19th, while Eliasson notched a 24-over par 240 to tie for 29th.
Preston will be competing in her first tournament as part of the scoring lineup. The freshman shot a 34-over par 250 in her first collegiate appearance.
K-State, which hosts the event every other year, will be joined in the field by Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Florida Gulf Coast, Illinois State, Kansas, Middle Tennessee State, New Mexico State, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Oral Roberts, UMKC and Wichita State.
This marks the eighth consecutive year the Wildcats have competed in the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational. K-State finished second last year with a 41-over par 905.
