ResultsK-State AthleticsKANSAS CITY, Kan. – K-State Women’s Rowing used strong performances from its 1st Varsity 8 and 2nd Varsity 8 to power the Wildcats to a fourth-straight victory over Kansas at the Sunflower Showdown. On the day, the two schools split the six total races with K-State ending the dual with back-to-back wins and a 17-6 advantage.

Trailing the Jayhawks after four races, 6-2, the Wildcats needed their Varsity 8s to both come through with wins to take the regatta for a fourth-straight year. The 2V8 got the comeback started with a convincing win, besting the Jayhawks’ time of 6:51.9 with a finish of 6:42.8. It was another impressive performance for the crew of coxswain Kara Omo and rowers Chelsea Goble, Lindsay Smith, Aly Bronder, Abby Weaver, Ariana Thompson, Hunter Anne Postier, Lacey Reifschneider and Kayla Brock, who improved to 3-1 on the season.

With their first advantage of the afternoon at 8-6, the 1V8s squared off in a winner-take-all race, worth 9 points, to close out the dual. Nearly matching the 2V8s finish, the squad of coxswain Hillary Schartz and rowers Meggie Murray, Noelle Dykmann, Lisa Angell, Brittany Long, Allison Dorau, Ashley Houser, Erin Roeser and Madi Haney finished off KU in a time of 6:42.9.

Head coach Patrick Sweeney was impressed with the showing from the varsity rowers. In both cases, the races started out neck and neck with the Wildcats eventually pulling away to win at a comfortable margin.

“I thought the 1V and 2V, both of them rowed well,” Sweeney said. “They’re really taking it up a notch in how they approach racing and how they’re handling racing.”

Sweeney, in particular, mentioned the difficulties handled by the 1V8 during their eventual victory.

“The 1V had some problems, some technical problems, but it didn’t freak them,” Sweeney said. “They actually stayed focused and they recovered from it and pushed away from [KU]. They still managed to pull it off and that’s what I was just saying to them, if you’re a good crew, if you make mistakes, you can still recover.

“And they did that, they didn’t panic. I was really pleased with that, they showed more maturity.”

Sweeney said the team’s training, as a whole, has been a major factor to their hot start.

“I don’t want to keep going back to the [Intercollegiate Rowing Center], but I think that since everyone has had the chance to train together as a unit in the tanks, it makes a huge difference,” Sweeney said. “Yes, we trained together to an extent in Ahearn, but you can see the veteran rowers really taking advantage of it. We still need to get that time on the water and our novice rowers will only get better with that experience, but it’s been really good so far.”

With the Sunflower Showdown trophy secured for another year in the friendly confines of Manhattan, Kan., the Wildcats hit the road for two big-time meets in the San Diego Crew Classic and SIRAs. First up is San Diego, Calif., on April 5-6, where K-State will look to keep its hot start to the season rolling.
