April 2, 2014MANHATTAN, Kan. – The 1st Varsity 8 was named the Conference USA Boat of the Week after a perfect showing at the Sunflower Showdown on Wyandotte County Lake this past Saturday. The crew of coxswain Hillary Schartz and rowers Meggie Murray, Noelle Dykmann, Lisa Angell, Brittany Long, Allison Dorau, Ashley Houser, Erin Roeser and Madi Haney were instrumental in helping the Wildcats to their fourth-straight Showdown win over the Jayhawks.
On the weekend, the 1V8 won both its races, including a victory in the decisive race at the Sunflower Showdown to give the Wildcats a 17-6 advantage over Kansas. The victory made it four-straight wins for K-State over Kansas at the Showdown. It was also the fourth-straight win for the K-State 1V8 over KU’s 1V8. The Wildcats top boat has not lost in head-to-head competition at the Sunflower Showdown since Nov. 11, 2006 – also the last time K-State lost the event itself.
Rounding out the winning performances for the 1V8 was a victory over the SMU Mustangs. The Wildcats dominated the race, winning by a margin of nearly 15 seconds. The boat’s latest performance improved its record to 3-2 on the season.
With no Big 12 Boat of the Week awarded this week, the Wildcats currently hold the top boats in both the Big 12, the 2V8, and Conference USA, the 1V8. It’s the team’s second ever C-USA weekly award and fourth overall between both conferences.
K-State will look to keep the momentum going this weekend at the 41st annual San Diego Crew Classic, which runs from April 5-6. More information on this weekend’s upcoming regatta can be found by visiting www.k-statesports.com.
