MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State Wildcats have seen strong performances from the 1st Varsity 8 recently, and the crew earned its second weekly honor on Thursday being named the Big 12 Conference Boat of the Week. The 1V8 was named Conference USA Boat of the Week after defeating in-state rival Kansas last week to retain the Kansas Cup as the boat won by nearly 11 seconds to seal the sweep of the Jayhawks.
The Big 12 award takes the first two weeks of April into account with the Wildcats’ top boat finishing 11th at the San Diego Crew Classic to open the month. The 1st Varsity 8 of coxswain Weatherly Butler, Traci Smiley, Hanna Wiltfong, Adria Ley, Anna Young, Allison Dorau, Nicole Burdiek, Aly Bronder and Ali Peters crossed the finish line in 7:13.4 at the Kansas Cup. The crew finished fifth in the Women’s Collegiate Varsity Petite Final at the Crew Classic to take 11th overall in the competition.
This is the first Big 12 Boat of the Week for the Wildcats as the team is preparing for the final stretch of the season. K-State’s next competition will be at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship in Oak Ridge, Tenn., this weekend.
