MANHATTAN, Kan. – On the heels of announcing its biggest signing class under head coach Pat Sweeney, the K-State rowing team lost one of its incoming student-athletes over the weekend as Topeka native Brenna Morgart was killed in a tragic auto accident on Friday.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Northland Christian Church, while visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday.

Sweeney, his staff and the entire K-State Athletics family are saddened by the news of Morgart’s passing and would like to extend their deepest condolences to the family. Assistant Coach Grace Riekenberg serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator and spoke with the Morgart family over the weekend.

“It’s hard to come face to face with the hole that now appears in what we thought the future would look like, but Brenna has left a legacy,” Riekenberg said. “She had the mindset that makes a person persevere in the face of something difficult, and that is what we need on our team. Hopefully we can learn from Brenna’s mindset. One of the things her mother said to me was how much Brenna had been looking forward to the new athletic opportunity waiting for her here at K-State. Our heart goes out to the family as we will all miss Brenna.”

Morgart graduated Summa Cum Laude and was a member of the swimming and cross country teams at Seaman High School in Topeka. She also was active in band, choir, student council and served as her senior class vice president.

"The entire K-State family is deeply saddened by Brenna's passing and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Morgart family during this difficult time." Athletics Director John Currie said.

Memorials may be made to the Northland Christian Student Activity Scholarship Fund and sent in care of Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka, 66608.
